Morning fellers…

The 550 and 250 are great alternatives. I like them and personally don’t have a bad thing to say about them. Heck the 550 with heated handles is infinitely easier to source than a 261 artic even though @GCJenks204 could help with that. I’m not a brand war guy and like most any saw… usually

The only reason I didn’t mention anything other than the 261 above is the power to weight ratio given what Ed said about his dad’s physical condition. The assorted other “farm” type saws are really perfect for most homeowner around the house chores, but are typically farther behind the power/weight/durability ratio. Add in a potentially stubborn old guy and the situation could be tricky.
Let me restate for clarity what I was referring to was a 550XP which will keep up with if not surpass a MS261. Sorry that I got it confused with the Rancher saws Husqvarna sells, that was not my intention. My bad. :(

Good morning monkeys,

I got the package from Poland today, finally secured the module.
Finished the accounts in the morning too, soon a drive to the accountant.

Slept 8 hours last night, first time in a long time that I get a good night's sleep.

I knew what you were throwing down.
If that is worth anything.

I knew what ya meant Steve. my bad I probably should’ve skipped the multi quote. The 550xp is a great saw. I’ll likely have a heated handle version before cold sets back in this year. 1a vs. 1b type debate really.

I think an enterprising feller with a welder could make some decent side scratch making and selling those kick starters to older saw users.

A 550XP will be dead in a heap long before the MS261. Plus the Autotune system sucks by comparison.

That’s a fair point with Husky’s seeming attack on right to repair with needing a scan to replace AT parts. I forgot about that.

It's for an elder that wants to cut a bit of firewood, not a production logger. Lots of folks using them and 562's in that capacity that have been just fine.
The question comes down to this, is the Stihl worth the extra couple of hundred dollars to cut up a few chord of wood? And that's not chump change we're talking here, Chimp change maybe, but not chump change by any means.

If I had to guess Ed’s dad will likely stick with the familiarity of the feel of a Stihl. Best approach would be to fondle them both and see which one he favors.

This is across the pond, over here there are many more dealer promotions for Husky, especially the 550 xpg.
The price difference between the xp and xpg is also very favorable, 30-40$, while on the Stihl the difference is 100-150$ to get heat.

If Ed's father wants heat, it's something to think about.

However, I have no doubt that the Stihl 261 is more reliable

Who knows, he might not give back Ed's 346xp, and it all be a moot point.
Either way, Stihl or Husqvarna, Ed's father should be in good shape.

While I have been doing my basic firewood chores with a 550XPG, I've been wanting something bigger for larger logs, but not too big as to still be nimble as I age. Original thought was the 562XPG, until a 359G came to me. It needed some work and after some consideration, a 357xp Meteor cylinder was placed on it with just a little dickering here and there.
I finished it up last night and gave it an initial run out in the woodshed with the lights on. Seems like it might be a keeper, will affirm in some wood later today when it gets warmed up.

The 357XP is my favorite saw.

Ok dudes, I'm going to be that guy with the stupid question.
My Dad told me tonight he wants a new saw. His old 029 super was never the easiest starting.
Keep in mind, severe arthritis in his shoulders. Bad back. Just got cortisone in his back last week and his knees today..

16" bar is what it will run. I figure a decomp would be a plus, if said model has one. I think electronic carb for no tuning is also the way to go. Stihl or Husqvarna.
So...ms261? 550mk2? Something else?
What would you guys recommend in this case?
I'm going to have him try my ms180 this weekend but I know that will be smaller than he wants.
I have a 346xp ill have him try too but there isn't a new direct replacement to that model.
Buy him @Shane¹ dolmar!

Why? I like my Dad...

I passed along all the info and variables on bothe the 550 and 261 this morning.

He just sent me this picture

So that solves that debate.
Now have Steve stuff it with extra cheese. He did an excellent job with mine! I put it to good use today. The 261 and my mmws 400 go on the truck almost everyday.IMG_5602.jpeg

We have this 1 service writer I rarely mention. His name is Evan, but I call him Even.
I just heard how this morning he was attempting to help a customer for about 45 minutes program their garage door opener.
They were not attempting to program an integrated opener that some cars have. They were actually sitting in the service drive area trying to program a hand held remote to the customer's garage door opener...
