New Tractor needs a new winch and grapple

A few videos of it in action. I’ve yet to run my tractor at 540 PTO RPM when pulling logs. I’m usually at or under 1,500rpm, 540 is 2200rpm on my tractor. The winch just pulls hard.

The clutch slipping was my fault, was still getting a feel for the winch in this video.

Get a self releasing snatch block, they are awesome.

Little stuff like this doesn’t even work the winch.

I forgot you were the guy that had experience with one when I was buying it...lol!

It’s been a great machine so far. Only problem has been the 3 point, hunts when using the loader if there’s weight on it. Ordered a seal kit for the rock shaft cylinder today.

That is common with those. That should fix it as long as the piston isn’t scarred. It isn’t TOO bad to change it out. We are about to drop the tail off of a McCormick MTX 135 for a PTO clutch repair. Going to be a pain in the testicles.

I found a slightly used M35 uniforest winch that I'm considering buying. I actually used it and cut wood for the guy so I know its history. Still, it's only $500 less retail...

Yup doesn’t seem like too bad of a job. Just hope I don’t find any cracks in the housing. Doubtful by the way it’s acting. First time I pick it up for the day it always chatters (air) and works great for a bout the first 30 minutes of operation. As the fluid gets up to temp it slowly starts hunting. Can also hear the fluid hissing in the rockshaft cover when it’s good and hot, and pump is laboring to keep the hitch up. Shouldn’t do that at all, once up should be held in place by trapped fluid

Yes, nearly new M35 for $2500. It's probably listed as in Oswego. That's the one. The military winch just isn't going to work well. If I have to dump half the cost or more into a home made one and only get half the convenience and versatility then it's probably better money spend on getting a real one...

I've been good. Just started the outage so working 12 hr nights for the next 19 days.

The ground is starting to thaw. You going to get another load out?

Don’t blame you for giving up on a homemade winch. Like you said Chances are you wouldn’t have been as happy with it. That’s a good buy on that 35M

Load #3 is on the landing ready for pick up. Went on a blitz to get them out before the yard was too soft. Only took me 2 days but I didn’t beat the thaw. May not be completely full, only a couple big trees in this pile. 10 more logs and it would be stuffed full...oh well. I’ll pick it back up when things dry out.

Nice AJ! What size tractor will you be mounting it on? Did it come with the screen for on top?

Don’t pull to far from straight, it will wrench on your 3-point hard and it’s possible to flip the tractor if pulling to far from center line.

Never pull the brake rope (red) while the clutch is engaged and you’re in hauling (black). Not sure why that is but my manual says never do that. The brake should be automatically engaged when you release the clutch rope which allows you to tow your logs on the cable without having to rehook your chokers to your winch skid.

If the 35M is the same as my 45M you’ll want 5/16 choker chains, 3/8 wont fit the grooves on your cable brackets or the ones on the skid for storing them.

Make sure you disengage the PTO before lifting. No brainer but worth mentioning.

Before heading out into the woods, pull out all the cable and do a full length hard pull to coil the cable tightly on the drum. I usually do this at the end of the day also to make sure the cable doesn’t get bound on itself. Maybe overkill doing it daily, but my cable hasn’t tangled itself yet.

Would highly recommend investing in a self releasing snatch block. Worth their weight in gold and allows you to safely pull perpendicular to the direction the rear of the tractor is facing.

Lastly and most importantly...you’re going to love it and wish you bought one years ago

Nice toy! I only have about 20 hours with one. I dont know all the tricks with one. They are nice once you figure them out. The one I was working with was a pain to get into free spool. Dont know if that was operator error or the way the mechanism was set up. After a few hours of use I got it down pat.

If you haven't got any blocks to redirect then I highly recommend you get 2. A couple rigging slings and some shackles will allow you to set the blocks anywhere you like.

Man, you dont realize how useful something like that is unless you have done it without. I have not used one but let me tell you, if it was my winch that I was operating I would have two of those. The amount of walking you do back and forth checking the log to figure out when to release from a block can be daunting. Especially when tmyou have the winch line out 200' and around 2 corners.

One thing I will add for your consideration @ajschainsaws, is that you can winch a lot larger load then you can pull or drag with your tractor, especially in the 30-40 hp range.
