New Tractor needs a new winch and grapple

Swing grapple on the back, with a brush grapple on the front would be a sweet setup

Like a mini skidder! Luckily, we get the loggers to drag a lot of “trash” trees to the landings for us. That would be a sweet setup.

Here’s a good question are you wanting to lift or skid? Have you looked into a swinging grapple? The grapples you guys have been posting are brush grapples which work great for that purpose but really for handling logs aren’t the best option.

I am wanting one for moving tops, brush, etc. I will load some logs with it, but I am also looking at having a small rotator boom built to mount on a mini log trailer.

Better option is the forwarder style trailers we have one and it works pretty well for what it is, nothing like having 8 wheel drive or the lift of the real machine. If done right the bypass grapples will pick up brush really well for piling and can carry in the bunks of the trailer.

Try boxing the ears in, ours that goes on our 200 shovel has 4 hinges that are boxed. If we did it again I’d build an insert to fit in our standard log grapples full rotation with the ability to throw and shake dirt out.

Didn’t pay attention you’re running a square barrel cylinder, maybe a hinge or two per side to help take the extra stress load.

Everything attachments now makes larger stuff. I am nothing but impressed with mine. It’s the little things that make a big difference, the tines that line up and touch so you can be very precise picking stuff up, lighter weight, customer service, etc.

My buddy has a larger construction grade and It’s no comparison in quality or construction.

Any grapples better than no grapple, best of luck, EA for the win.

Please reconsider some of the “off brand” tractors. A friend and coworker bought a Mahindra 70 hp and the engine blew three days shy of the warranty ending. Got it repaired, then had an electrical fire due to the gauge cluster shorting out. About lost the barn because of it. He’s had nothing but issues and parts and dealers are hard to come by.

However, I have heard good things about Kioti, but I worry about dealers coming and going. Deere, CNH, and MF will be around forever.

Kubota.

There are 13 John Deere, 2 Fergusons, & a couple Ford/New Holland here on our place & I couldn’t be more satisfied with my ‘Bota.

That’s just the Farm tractors, that’s not counting the yellow Caterpilar & John Deere, or the Case, Takeuchi, & Kobelco.

The Kobelcos are assembled in North Georgia: ours is Cummins 6BT powered with name brand parts.

Dealer Support is Important as someone will always need parts, Service, stuff at some point.

The whole reason I own a Kubota is because the Deere dealer swapped owners a few years ago & they didn’t see the value in showing me a tractor when I went there first. I walked in & told them I was there to buy a tractor & they thought I was carrying on.

I try real Hard not to bother Sun South John Deere anymore if I can help it.

I was told Saturday that my tractor just isn’t made for that kind of force & I will destroy my loader.

Got my winch and the old mounting bracket out of the woods today. It came off of a Cat D4 setup for fire plow use. The WMA that got it didn’t need a blade winch so they had it cut off and a brush bar put on. It has been laying on the edge of junk pile since 2005. I never paid much attention to it before, but dig it out today. It is a 20,000 lb Tulsa worm gear enchanted with hydraulic motor. This thing has never been used! I went ahead and had hoses made so I can hook it up to make sure it works. More pics to follow. It may be a long project.

I have nothing but good things to say about my uniforest winch. I chose the manual version for 2 reasons. First is because my older John Deere uses the transmission as a parking brake so I operate the winch from the seat of the tractor so I can apply the hydraulic brakes. Second was the cost, remote option was another $1k if I recall correctly.

My tractor is 50hp at the PTO so the 45M was a good fit being rated at 30hp to 60hp. The power of the winch is impressive to say the least. And the storage it comes with is better than all the other brands I researched before making my purchase. Has space for 8 choker chains, peavey, ax and a built in saw scabbard. None of the other reputable brands (Wallenstein, Farmi, etc) have all those features that are included, have to buy them. Pulling capacity is also better with the uniforest than other brands in a similar class. My 45M is rated to pull 10k, competitors are in the 8.5k range. I also have 230ft of cable where the standard of other brands is 180ft.

Finally, one of the specs that really pushed me toward the uniforest was it’s weight and wide blade. My winch weighs a little over 700lbs, other brands of similar sized winches weigh between 400 & 500 pounds. Don’t know where the extra weight is but I can tell you it’s a well built HD sombitch.

The models that would suit your machine (65 & 85), nice Deere btw, have even heavier duty triple disc clutches in them.

Sorry for the looooooooong post, hope this info helps in your decision. Once you get a winch you’ll wonder how you ever lived without one. Hands down best piece of equipment I’ve acquired for working in the woods aside from my tractor itself. Happy shopping!
