I would try another spark plug. I have seen new ones bad before. I have worked on a bunch of ice augers in my part time job. Every winter they come in for repair.
They are no different to work on than another 2 stroke engine. What does the plug look like when you pull it. Is it wet or dry or does it look normal. Have you tried half choking it to see what it does when you rev it. It might be lean from an air leak. I have never seen a coil that would idle but not rev, but there is always a first time. How does the piston look through the exhaust port, is it real wet or is it dry. Just looking for some kind of sign to help with a diagnosis. Also you said the compression was 160 PSI is that correct.

That is up for debate I guess. It appears to be yet uses a conventional carb. It doesn't have a secondary air source. It looks like the engine is built for it yet it doesn't have that style of carb. I took a video of it running but thanks too my worthless ISP we have way slow upload speed. Some of the slowest in the country it would appear. Video is a 1 1/2 long and it has been trying to upload for 30 minutes now.

Anyways with my tach on the engine it shows rpm from 600 up to 1300 and sometimes 1800. It is all over the place. The coil primary reads 760m ohms and secondary to ground shows 1750ohm. I have no idea what spec would be on it.

Can anyone else hear audio? I can't on the iPad but other videos play sound? I may have used a bad word at end of the video (*s-word) not sure if YouTube shuts audio down somehow for that

I ran a metal screw driver all over the spark plug wire lead and nothing changed.

Are you positive the fuel lines are in the correct spots?

The strato saws I have seen use a normal looking carb, they just use the other port for fresh filtered air. There must be some sort of mechanical lever or something to open the secondary port. I had a saw that had a sticky secondary port valve and it ran like crap.

I didn't see any type of valve on it. I might have to take a closer look tomorrow. I would like to see an IPL of it. That would help for sure in determining that.

Yes that is it and I don't see any valve on the intake. It is just solid on the lower portion.

I bet the jug was designed and used before the old school parts ran out. Now, that same cylinder probably has a strato carb on it

That is what my thinking was as well. I told the guy to get a coil for it. I can't see any other reason for it. I will try to make a video tonight where the sound works. THe sounds seems to tell a lot. I was able to richen the low side until it started smoking at idle and performance did not change at all.

I remember my dad had a 225 Suzuki outboard engine that would idle all day long but wouldn't throttle up. I did some testing on the mechanical/electronical advance timing and the sensor wasnt advancing the timing so it would not rev up. The engine is acting the same way to me.

Just an update. I gave the unit back to the guy and told him coil is all I could come up with for a problem. He put a coil on it today and said it fixed it. It immediately responded with the new coil.

Great news some of these electronic problems will drive a guy nutty. I wonder how we will fare when we have to really work on these m-tronic auto tune saws.
