Janka hardness is not an indication of density. Alaskan birch does not have the density of traditional hardwoods and thus it's not that hard to cut.Short growing season, different species:
Betula neoalaskana
Small growth rings. They start budding 3rd week of May. By Sept 1st they start dropping leaves. Got mad respect for any tree that can live in this frigid place!
Smidgen further north, no more trees. Barren tundra. The last great stand.....
Nothing magical about it.
