Short growing season, different species:
Betula neoalaskana

Small growth rings. They start budding 3rd week of May. By Sept 1st they start dropping leaves. Got mad respect for any tree that can live in this frigid place!

Smidgen further north, no more trees. Barren tundra. The last great stand.....
Janka hardness is not an indication of density. Alaskan birch does not have the density of traditional hardwoods and thus it's not that hard to cut.
Nothing magical about it.

Growing season is about the same as the part of Ontario I lived in. And not far off from Upper MI and Northern MN.

It's ironic, talking density with bwalker.

Alaska birch is dense enough to turn the exhaust temps nuclear on a ported cs 1201. Bogs down to 6000 rpms.

The mill frame needs to cool 5 minutes before another 16 ft ripcut can be made.

Couldn't mill the big ones with a 660 mag. Would bog to zero rpms with the slightest feed pressure. Was melting plastic oiler gears like candy.

Talking down on saws you've never run, talking down on trees you've never cut. Round n round we go. Weeeeeeee!

The same source you quoted the Janka hardness from also lists the density...hint.
I love your tall tales of melting 066's.. I'd swear you are a Texan.
As for your 1201. Sounds like a poor port job on a underpowered saw to me.

Oh my! bwalker wow! I've obviously heard u say this before. Why repeat yourself?
Haven't you heard.... walker has used every kind of oil and fuel, cut every kind of tree in every state and most countries, ridden every kind of motorcycle and sled, knows more about firearms than John Browning, his dad can beat up your dad, is a complete expert on absolutely everything and he will tell you that over and over and over. Yet he spends his time talking to mere mortals on chainsaw forums.

Maybe the echo fanbois shouldnt be swinging purses in a thread specifically about a stihl saw in the first place? This thread is so far off the original intent anymore theres no point leaving it open anymore.... it was a civilized discussion about the updates to the ms400.1 and went sharply downhill recently...
You must be new here. This thread was always going to get derailed. Feel free to check out until there is some real info on the 400.1 in the spring.

That’s some mighty fresh looking gear🤔

Snow will keep stuff that way. Just abrasive enough to scrub dirt off but not enough to take off paint. When it melts it washes stuff for free!

It’ll also keep ya from working once it gets to a certain point. That’ll keep stuff shiny too.
