HELP! Mall 1mg

I recently acquired a Mall 1mg chainsaw and have learned that my flywheel has lost its magnetism. Does anyone have one they would be willling to part out, or know where to get one? West central Illinois.

You can try to induce or recharge the magnets using "rare earth " type magnets .Try a google search on the subject .I've done same with limited results on an Echo weed eater .After sitting all winter it would lose charge on one magnet which recharged it then worked the entire season but again sitting idle would lose it again .In days of old it used to be a common problem on model T Fords .

Unfortunately the entire flywheel is the magnet, so I think ll I can do is get a new one

Like AL mentioned above a "quater" size strong are earth magnet should bring it back if its not cracked.....find them on amazon.

If you have a drill press, mount the FW on the chuck with a random bolt so it is facing magnet down. Put the rare earth magnet on a board or something not magnetic with duck tape or a strong adhesive double sided tape ( 5 min JB weld is best ) and clamp the board on the deck so that when the press is running the FW magnet passes by the Rare Earth one. Be sure its gapped very close 1/32" or closer. Let the press spin on the slowest speed for a good 5 minuets.

The FW magnet shout be strong enough to pick up an average size nail or 3" drywall screw.

This one here is off a 2mg, mine is a slightly different shape, less of a lip on it but there’s no pictures of it online, it has 2 or 3 cracked fins but it has a lot of them

Is it all steel? or a cast pot metal? I cant believe its steel or any ferrous metal as it will interfere with the magnet/coil

If its pot metal/aluminum the magnet is in the outer lip somewhere, might not be obvious. You can find it with a magnet...if its not all steel .

“It's a process. The magnets are permanent that are put in there. It could have been sitting near another device that was drawing the magnetism away from it. It's hard to say what demagnetizes flywheels but they're pressed inside there so there's no way you could re-magnetize it unless they're taken apart. You just got to find another flywheel dude. I don't see it that hard they come. You just got to spend the money and find the right deal and maybe you can get a whole donor saw that's all you don't see much the ones” —- another more knowledgeable guy telling me about my saw

You might try a concern in St Mary's Washington that changes names every so often. Started out as "cheap Stihl parts" then cheap chainsaw parts now I think custom chainsaw parts.Was and might still be Bryce Stots or something like that.At any rate at one time had a huge supply of used and new parts for Mall saws All I have is a 1940's model M Bridgeport milling machine with a brass tag saying Mall Tools Chicago .How it got to Ohio I'll never know .Good old manual machine just not as fast nor easiest to operate. Kind of like me old but steady .I do though have a number two model Mall that ran at one time .May run again may not .

Your thread may not be beneficial to you . BUT you did trigger some comments that "MAY" help me with a simple and common 8 HP B&S that had a generator field and complimenting magnets under the flywheel. I thank them for their comments as well as thanks to you for your thread.
Members that offered their opinion is what this forum is searched for when fellers have saw issues.
The 5 year members posting above have helped many members ,, if nothing more than stimulating a few thoughts.
Maybe your next post will deliver better results.

Rambling on about this antique Mall .If that magnet on the flywheel in a circle but with a space in the circle it should effectively act just like a set of breaker points .When it hits that space the break would cause the coil to fire because the collapse in the primary winding field in the coil .Strange way to do it IMO.

As a suggestion you might try to contact Larry Stiener who has a blog called Larry's house of saws .This gentleman probably has the most extensive collection of chainsaws and other devices in the USA if not the world .I do know he has quite a few Malls and most likely the knowledge of this type ignition .The last I recall seeing him was several years ago at the Ohio championship race at the Paul Bunyan show which I participated in ,didn' t do very well though .Once I ran with the big dogs but I was just a pup .
