Cool little skidder Mike. A small one like that can do double duty, skid small logs and support the ends of large logs suspended in a bigger arch.

Put my log arch under a heavy load today with a 24"x8' long Red Oak. She has no problem moving it around but I am seeing some modifications in the near future. I need a drop bar welded down toward the front half for the log to hold against so the back end of the log will lift. Definitely want some safety chains to secure the log in transport. That should help stabilize the log. The A frame is not going to be wide enough when I start getting into the bigger pine logs, so I will have to modify that. When my buddy welded the axles on somehow he managed to get both of them geeked out in the front so I'm going to have to find away to bring them back into square. That's what these kind of projects are for, finding out what works and what don't.unnamed (11).jpg unnamed (10).jpg unnamed (12).jpg unnamed (9).jpg unnamed (13).jpg

unnamed (18).jpg unnamed (16).jpg unnamed (15).jpg Started doing some mods on the log arch. At this point I should have just started from scratch. Nothing was truly welded just spot welded. Except the tongue the tongue was welded good however it tipped to the right about 3 1/2 inches. I tried to straighten it by parking my Ram 2500 on it but it wasn't moving. So I ended up cutting it loose and redoing it.

Mine is real similar only its a 05.
Nice arch too.
Are you gonna put some angle braces part way down the sides to wedge the log?

Thanks hoskvarna I still have more goodies to weld on to secure the log with chains once I get them on there.

Mattyo I just found a rear axle from a Buick Century and made it work.

Oh I know things can be cobbled together. ...I was going for something new....and more predictable....and it was not easy to find. Found it :)

I have no idea trailer shops even exist...

searchability is the trick... ie, what keywords do you use for finding weldable axles.... who knows. i searched for a long time to find what I found. if you have a better source then i'm sure anyone else will be very appreciative

When I worked at a junk yard years ago guys would come in and buy wheels, tires, and rear hub assemblies off of a Chevy Cavalier. They have a 4 bolt flange that's handy for fab work and are pretty cheap to replace. We sold them for next to nothing because we had a blue million of them on the hill.

One of the funniest conversations I ever heard at the junk yard was about these hubs. There was a guy at the counter wanting a set telling me he wanted to build a wood cart. Another customer said he wouldn't trust Chevy Cavalier hubs to handle much weight. Customer responded with " My mom owns a Cavalier and if it will haul my two 300lb sisters in the back seat with a trunk full of groceries from Walmart at 70mph down the highway then they are good enough for a wood cart."
