There are benefits to having family members who own heavy equipment! Back to the pics, here's a stump from a few days ago. I got it to go 90 degrees to the lean (it wanted to fall roughly in line with my axe handle) and it ended up right where I wanted it, so I was pretty happy with it.

Why the bore cut into the face cut?
It releases tension wood in the center of the tree preventing it from pulling fiber and mitigating the potential of barber chair or in the case of timber harvesting it saves more of the butt.

I think there might actually have been a reason for the one cut fell. The trees were killed by fire 12-13 years ago. The fire preserved them like wood does here in the desert. They are tall and skinny with a touch of lean here and there. Pounding wedges might result in getting stabbed with a hardened falling limb. I think one guy was cutting with the lean and one guy pushing or pulling…one cut is a lot faster and easier than 3 and when you’re just doing firewood, who cares about a little pull off the stump?
