Yup. But you'll pay big money on FleaBay for them.

I'm sure I could turn a nice profit on these but I have 2 sons and these will eventually go to them . My oldest already has a brick top I fixed up for him .
They both grew up using LB's at home , it's what I've always had .

So i got's to blame this thread and you guys for
sparking my interest in the ole lawn Boys again.
Made a deal on a bronze colored butter cup and
it is heading my way. And it runs. Model 3050.
I have the yellow version but never seen the bronze.

The Bronze color was used on the all 1958-59 C series brick top mowers but I always thought the buttercup was yellow and hence the name ??

Hey , to me lawnmowers are (almost) as cool as chainsaws so you can't just have one !!
Remember to time the blade in the right position so they run smooth .

After reading this I think mine must be a bronze "Buttercup" I will have to get a picture if I dig it out. I know my dad bought it second hand in the early 60s. Other than the coil being cracked it run ok. I think the bottom bushing/bearing is egged out. The coil looks like the Bendix Scintilla Remington used on their saws. When I first got it started the exhaust was so full of carbon it wouldn't run. Now it dies when the weather isn't just right. I think it has a air leak from the bearing.

Those crank seals are common and even with some wear at the bearing a new seal will help . There are machine shops that can install new bearings too .

The buttercup got its name because all of the later ones where yellow, but they really where called the utility model and came in the bronze color for 58-59. the decks and handles also changed alog the way. early ones had the tee handle and ribbed deck , the later model ones had a d shaped handle an smooth deck. All of that series was 18" cut. The blades are hard to find.later lawnboy made a model that said utility on the engine, and had the wheel setup like a regular mower. great poit about timming the blade alot of people do not know that and the little mowers will shake like crazy.

I think I have an extra coil, I will look. the C engine has bronze bushings that can easily be replaced. the seals can be replaced with out tearing the engine down, just take a small screw and insert into seal body and pull out with a set of pliers. press new one in.

I passed this up the other day while picking up old chainsaw metal signs. Should I go back and get it?

It's funny , but if you don't gather more current common signs now that you can almost have them give you , 20 years or so down the road they'll be a hot item and you'll think back about it . I think just about any advertisement items and the like will eventually become collectable .
If only I had started into a lot of stuff 40 plus years ago !!

While my main experience and passion is with chainsaws, I find my knowledge of these mowers is more limited. Operating principal is the same, but they are different. Is there a way to find out its birth date from the serial number?

The model tag says 7084. Looking online I found some information that says 1975-77. Didn't know they made bricktops that late. Learn something knew everyday.

They are very similar to chainsaws but are governed to limit blade tip speed for government regulations. The early ones have fly weights under the flywheel that control the max speed the later ones have wind vien governors. Lawn boy was made by omc alot of similar build between the mowers and outboard motors. The model of any paticular lawnboy will have a year range that It was made. Then the serial number breaks will tell you what year it was made.
