Seems to be some confusion going on??
Have a look at his pics one is of his 661 with 661 cover something is wrong studs are too short??. His 2nd pic is of his 660 with 660 cover and yes all looks good on that saw.
Can someone show me the pic with 660 cover on his 661 I seemed to of missed it?? lol
The 661 is not fine to the OP I take it its a 2nd hand saw? or is it new? either way I'd take it to the dealer you can't run a 661 like that you will be stripping bar nuts and studs all the time if you try to run the 661 cover like that.

His 661 with 661 cover and that's with rear nut done up tight something is wrong studs are too short?. If the saw is 2nd hand has someone done a dodgy with the studs?

It's not tightened down in the picture from what I can see.

Saw was purchased second hand, can't afford a new one. When I get time later this week I will head to the dealer and compare my saw to their new one if they still have it. I agree the studs seem short, but the best way will be when I compare to a new one.
I can tell you the guy I purchased from had 2 saws, a standard and an R model. This one started it's life an R. I don't need a wrap handle for bucking and noodleing so the previous owner and I agreed to switch it over to a non R and reduce the price a bit. I wonder if the R and the standard carry different studs (I know the R has the larger west coast cover)?

To clear up the rear stud in the pic is tight. I didn't post a pic of the 660 cover on but it fits like it does on the 660, plenty of threads. The difference I can see in covers is the 661 is about 1/4" wider, but the big difference is where the captive nuts sit has a raised shoulder. This is the difference between protruding studs and getting a good grab vs not.
If you look close at the 661 pic where the front stud should be you can see the raised shoulder. It's hard to see and the pics don't do it justice but it's higher than it looks.

Again thanks for bearing with me and helping me out on this one fellas. Means a lot to me, I'm obviously not a pro and don't claim to be. I need all the help I can get as even the 2 dealers I spoke to seem like they don't know a ton about this saw.
Have a great rest of your weekend, I'm off to work.

Looks like you have found the problem the r model obviously has shorter studs so you can't run a standard 661 clutch cover with captive bar nuts. You will have to run the older cover you found that fitted or get a R model larger west coast cover both will use standard bar nuts or you get the correct studs to run the stock 661 cover choice is yours.
Happy we got to the bottom of it you should be back sawing with peace of mind in no time.
I will add when you go to the dealer get him to look up the studs should be two different part numbers for the standard 661 and the R model.

The issue here is the tapered bar studs.the newer clutch covers, such as the 661 have the inside of the holes slightly tapered. the older style covers were just flat. Apple's and oranges.
You just have to be cognizant of the bar studs and match the correct cover to it. Nothing more than that.
If you look at bare bar studs it makes more sense.
The newer bar studs with bigger collar appear to be slightly longer. Not necessarily more threads, but has a little flat coned shape protruding piece on the stud. As compared to the older studs that have no collar and are flat on the end.
All in all, glad to hear you found the issue. Post up some vids of side by side cuts between the 660 snd 661 in tbe same piece of wood using same bar and chain for us. It would be a cool comparison.

I have a confused saw, now I'm confused.

I have a 661r that had the wrap handle removed and the larger cover removed.

So apparently the 661/661r may have different studs???

So the standard cover is on a 661r model and that apparently doesn't work. At least not on my saw.

Others have said the captive stud with no thread as seen in my pic is normal and the studs are all the same.

I looked at a bunch of pics online and some seem to look like mine with no thread protruding.

Redbull has a bunch of these and has pm'd me and is trying to help me figure it out. So big thanks again to the great members on this site

I believe this was answered already with the shoulder of the stud to cover clearance. I was just showing it doesn't look like they have much thread past the cover.

IMHO, I think your the only one adding to the confusion in this thread.

Saws with captive bar nuts, the studs don't stick out. The studs sit inset a little bit.

Ain't no difference, in the studs, from a 661 1/2 wrap saw to a 661 3/4 wrap saw. Same length studs. Only difference in the clutch cover, is one is longer/wider on the bottom.

Yes true lol. that was speculation on my behalf as to why his 661 studs seem short with the stock 661 cover? seemed the only logical answer apart from someone has messed with the studs. And no one said anything about the studs on a 661 stick out like on a 660 they sit just under the face of the nut just like on your 661. the op studs are half a nut short can no one see it?

This is with the nut done up tight and does not look right to me, he has already stripped the front one just putting a bar on.

Here are my 661s. All my studs measure same. Based on that pic the OP posted, he should measure his studs and see how they compare with mine. Ok no sick jokes you turkeys! :roto2qtemeto:
