Just another 3120xp build......but it's MY first

So @davidwyby hooked me up with this saw that originally came from @Flying_Dutchman
It's got some issues that need resolved but as a whole, it's a great saw. Lots of stripped fasteners, and other things, but well make 'er right in the end.


This is my first 3120xp. I've had plenty of questions already, and I'm sure there will be more. So I figured I'd start this to document them. Well, I should have had all the info I've picked up so far, all on this one thread, but I didn't. So here are links to the other two short threads on this saw.

Typically, it was filthy inside, at least by my standards. I can't stand to work on a dirty saw.
Overall though, better than the saws I usually get myself into & everything cleaned up well.

The front muffler bracket was completely hooped. The nuts for the muffler bolts had wore themselves right through the bracket. I'm guessing just from running it with loose bolts.


So, I cleaned up & reemed the holes with this heavy brush so that a 1/4" washer would sit flush on the hole.


Then, I needed the smaller diameter & I liked a washer that was a little thicker material, so I took a lock washer and made it.........not locking anymore.


Then with a little brazing, we're back in action.

Fresh coat of high heat paint and we're in business.

When I started pulling the saw down, random bolts, screws, & anti-vibe buffer pieces started falling out like when you get that free extra turn buying loose m&m's at the vending machine. Luckily there was a head bolt in the mix, because...... well...... there were only 3 in it when it arrived. Surprisingly, unlike many others on the saw, the hole wasn't stripped. What a relief.

Same here. Hate the feeling of working on a dirty saw. Good job there cleaning the tank and the crankcases !!

The intake block was cracked, so I found an oem block and got it ordered. Along with the factory intake gaskets.

The HD filter was roached, so I ordered a factory foam filter and appropriate cage. I like an oiled foam filter better anyway. Personal preference.

With everything getting cleaned up, I figured I'd take the time and get my signature holes drilled in the dogs....... Okay, I know, I know. I'm not the only one that does this, but I mean come on....... Nothing is lighter than a hole right?! This saw will take any advantage it can get. By the way, cobalt drill bits are the only option here. If you've got quality dogs, they're harder than the hubs of hell.

After a fresh coat of paint to match everything else.

Just for fun, take air filter blow it off from inside out, soak it in some fuel mix, blow it out from inside. Then you have a spare.

Good call, I always like to have a spare on hand. I'll see how this one comes out after a soak.

So there is a small amount of pitting/rot on the oil pump. But nothing majorly concerning. The oil pump is encased/set in a pile of old deteriorating silicone it looks like. Talking with a couple people "in the know," it sounds like these saws might be prone to air leaks caused by factory vents behind the oil pump? Considering pulling and resealing if necessary and/or advised

Haven't got there yet. Either this evening or tomorrow. I also need to keep in mind the internal hole in the crank from inside the crank case to the needle bearing for the clutch drum. Not sure if they all had this or not. I'm guessing some tight wraps with electrical tape would get it good enough to vacuum test. I'm sure they aren't as bad as they sound, but it SOUNDS LIKE these things are riddled with air leaks that are on purpose from the factory haha.

Gaaahhh! Flashbacks! Flashbacks! Yes, there are vents in the case behind the oil pump on some of those saws.

I hate the Husqvarna "toofs" they put in the deflectors of this era. All they're good for is melting brake flags and turning everything black.

So I remedied that. Screen is all cleaned, everything back together with a fresh coat of paint. I'll keep it stock for now. I'll be gutting the inner "tube baffle" in short order though. I'll also get rid of the louvers in the deflector. It'll be fine for now to get a stock baseline.

Well, It passed pressure/vacuum test with flying colors. I guess I don't have to worry about seals just yet. I'll just leave everything well enough alone for now & not worry about the silicon on the oil pump either.

Starting to look a little bit like a saw again. I noticed there is only one blue coil wire going to the kill switch. No additional black ground wire.


Judging from this hole, it's supposed to have a self grounding switch. Instead of this one that was in there. Makes more sense now why it wasn't working.



So, I'll either have to buy the correct switch with the eyelet, or just make my own short ground wire, to screw it down to the case. It's all the crippy crap little things that start to suck the time out of you haha. I get lucky a lot of the time. Other times I "small parts" myself into an extra $100 bill on a build.
