Yeh,

I wanted todo the same thing, but as my son lives with his mum, all of a sudden my son was 13 and not intrested in coming to see me. His mates were more important, he only saw me every 2wks so I was always on the losing side.
I cannot force him, I just let him know, “this is your choice”.
Yeh It sucks.. but if I push to hard, it will push him away

Maybe he will change his mind, but when, that’s a long wait to find out.

Cheers
Can’t imagine that, sucks man. I think it will come in time, but I don’t know how it feels to be the one waiting in that situation.

Time for Austin to split a crank case for the first time. Sorry about the upright video, wasn’t thinking.

Metallica and saws? Doesn’t get much better than that.

Cool thread as well. Good to see someone even younger than me doing these things.

@Wonkydonkey thats a tough spot your in. I think some have made some good suggestions. Hopefully it all works out for you and your family. I hope you and your son reconnect sooner than later. Do they live far away from you?

Thanks man. Austin and I have a lot in common when it comes to music. Once in a while we jam on guitars together, and we play you guessed it...a lot of Metallica. Lol!

Not really for your distances, 70 round trip, but far enough and it takes 45 mins to 1hr each way

I showed Austin how to heat the case with the torch and set the crank in the clutch side. Once it cooled and we were ready for the flywheel side he said “Dad, I’m really not comfortable doing this part, I don’t want to mess up my saw.” I tried to convince him that it would be ok and I would be watching over his shoulder but he insisted so I assembled the cases. He’ll do the next saw, I didn’t want to force his one on him if he wasn’t confident.

Crank installed and gasket in place.

Cases together and fasteners tightened.

Seals installed and ready to move on with assembly.

Next he installed his new meteor piston and cylinder. I ordered a 359 piston and what showed up was a 357 piston. My brother @skidder had a 357 cylinder kit in the barn and Austin struck a deal with him for it. Thanks Moose! So we’ve changed course slightly, instead of building a 2159 he’s got a 2156 minus the stuffers.

Now the cylinder. It’s worth noting that Austin needed zero guidance in this process, he really knows his way around an engine. He’s growing up too fast.

With the crankcase sealed up so debris couldn’t find its way in there, he started work on the clutch side.

Installed oil pump, bar plate and clutch.

Next he put together the flywheel side by installing the coil, flywheel, shroud, Turbo duct, wiring and recoil. I missed a few pics, sorry but he’s tough to keep up with.

Mate this is awesome. Every time you show a photo of your son with a smile on his face it puts a big smile on mine! If he can already build a saw at his age, and has an obviously good work ethic, he will never be short of work when he is older. Good job man!

Once we ran out of things to install he wanted to check compression...it pumped up to 180psi WITH a base gasket! Out comes the solder to check squish. The band in this meteor cylinder is strange, squish at the outer most edge came in at .030, but the squish in toward the edge of the chamber is only .022. I’ve never seen a squish band that got tighter as it goes toward the center of the piston. Weird, hope it’s not indicative of a bad cylinder.

Check out the profile of the crushed solder

Squish at the edge of the combustion chamber, further toward the center of the piston. Backwards taper???

The last thing I did for him was slather some JB on this crack. Didn’t want the other end to break loose and have it hit the flywheel while running. Should hold fine, I ground a groove in the crack with a Dremel then filled it with JB.

Thanks bud. I’m having a lot of fun doing his with him, kind of building that “bro” level relationship. We cut wood at my moms yesterday, he stayed at it for 6 hours while I was doing some much needed loader work around her place. Very proud of him and I think cutting wood with a saw that he himself rebuilt from the ground up will be a satisfaction he has never experienced.

Glad you’re enjoying the thread, can’t wait to post a video of his first cuts with it...he’s gonna have a big ole smile.

After we hit work stoppage on his Johnny Red he wanted to make a dog for his Homelite 340. Can’t say I blame him, I would go nuts without a dog on a Saw. I clamped a 372 dog to his bumper and he welded it together. He’s still learning how to read and work the puddle so he had a blow through. But, he still did it and no one helped him make it...priceless.
