I really appreciate your efforts to restore the NU-17 to running condition, I have several of them running and also some Pioneer 400,450 and 550`s among many dozens of other IEL and Pioneer saws so I know the effort involved in getting them running and keeping them doing so. Keep up the good effort, the more difficult the struggle the more rewarding it is when done.

If anyone happens to look at the IPL`S for the NU-17 ,the Pioneer 400, 450,550 you will see no replacement bar studs are offered, many other Pioneer saws are made the same, bar studs are not removable.

Well Basher, the NU 17 saga ends with it kicking my butt. As I went further into these two saws to try to make one good one things just started looking worse and worse. As I said before, they were used in training schools which is hard on them, with different people tearing them down and trying to put them back, so lots of parts were missing, gaskets not there, and the one with compression but the cut off bar studs turned out to have one con rod bolt and the bearings were a rusted chunk. I am surprised it turned at all, I guess because only one bolt and it wasn't tight. Both coils were bad and both primers were deteriorated beyond recognition. So I picked the best parts from both and built a shelf queen to represent the model in the collection.

This rear cover has tags and the serial is 1541.

This cover has no tags and it doesn't have NU 17 cast in the back and does have this pattern on the top, where the one I used is smooth.

These are the fasteners I replaced. So it has been a fun learning process and reminded me of how difficult these old saws are to work on, with fat fingers trying to start screws and nuts in tight places, and part fitment being challenging in some spots. I can say the same about old STIHL models and Homelites and others. When I think about the first time I tore down a MS 500i where the engineers actually put a lot of effort into making it easy for service, I marvel at how far we have come in this trade.

I realize restoring those old saws is not for everyone and you were dealt a very difficult hand with those saws not being original. You have a lot of good parts to offer up , I see they move on eBay and possibly on this and other chainsaw sites if you were so inclined.The way they were built was not the easiest for servicing, they were part of the ever changing early development of chainsaws when companies were looking to put together a lot of ideas on what a chainsaw should be built, parts layout and all. They were just a stepping stone into what the modern chainsaw would become. By the time Pioneer began making the model 1100 they were on their way to getting the layout of their parts and handles in a nice layout.

It is interesting how many versions Pioneer made from that one design format. I assume the differences were in CC's? Cool that you still have a working primer. I looked at the exploded view and it looks like the diaphragm is cone shaped and would be difficult to duplicate.
Here is what is left over:

Piston and cylinder could be used but no rings are present. Crankcase no good due to studs being cut off. Coil is bad and the black handle top with non-functional primer is going to Jim. Clutch is missing but sprocket is good. I don't think either of these saws ever cut wood, so the carb is NOS and all the metal parts are in good condition other than paint being perfect.
I am open to trade for any chainsaw related stuff I can use to decorate my collection area. I have lots of STIHL stuff so I am looking for signs, posters, collectibles or anything else from other brands.

The primer on all my Pioneers have been rebuilt with NOS internal parts, I had 6 original NOS complete pumps and many spare diaphragms I got from our original Pioneer dealer when he closed out shop. I have been rebuilding and fixing my Pioneer saws for over 30 years picking parts from the stash I got from the closed out shop and from other Pioneer collectors I have made contact with over the years..
