And yet another Pioneer arriving today.
My new inmate is a 1980 Pioneer 1074 in very clean shape.
Especially the plastic air filter cover is next to mint while on many
offered 1074s these parts a damaged with broken edges.
Air filter insert is missing but the rest of the saw is very promising.
What's strange is: The apparently factory supplied decal on the
air filter cover covers the cover's lock so it has been pierced
to get access to lock. Weird.

Hi Pete,
here are pics of the inside of AF-cover:

1074_af-cover-2.jpg

1074_af-cover-1.jpg

There is a inner rectangular structure probably to press the edges of the filter onto the walls of the carb's
housing. The inner dimensions of the inner box are 70 mm x 118 mm which translates to 2 3/4" x 4 11/16".
The thickness of the wall is about 1.6 mm ~ 1/16".

The carb area looks like this:

1074_carb-area.jpg

The purpose of the lower of the two hoses is obvious: Fuel supply for carb. The upper one seems to
ventilation line. It originates at a nipple (bottom in pic) and then goes in a bow through a bore (top in pic) and
simply ends there dead. Is it supposed to be as such?

Anyone has an IPL for the 1074? Haven't found one yet but I could ask Ray ...
At least I already have found a service manual for her.

There is one in ebay US currently but it costs 45 $ plus intl. shipment plus import fees
so it sums up to be as expensive as the entire saw so far.
Will try to build my own filter from a wire screen and a felt sheet.

My Pioneer 650 is running finally.
It took me a while to find the supply bore for idle fuel channel
being clogged with dirt.
Once I had identified the particular flyspec in the metering
chamber not to be a spot of dirt but a clogged bore I pried
it open with valve cleaner needle and rebuilt the carb.

My 1074 needs a new sprocket:

I had to fix some spots with new paint, change diaphragms and gaskets and I made new decals for her.
Found a brand new Oregon clutchdrum with Powermate RIM expected to arrive this week.

Nice looking little beauty she is.

Very nice 1074. I've never seen a black AF cover. Maybe export only?

This one came out of a dump as you see but cleaned up. Runs great.

I seen lots of black covers, they were replacements for the brittle green originals, not certain where they were made.

I suspect most of them didn't do well when the operator put his knee on them.

I suspect they were black as it's the cheapest color.

Bryce had many of them when he picked up all that Pioneer parts and gear a few years back but they must have all sold as there are no longer any listed on his eBay site.

So I'm glad my AF-vover is next to mint. Only thing puzzling me is:
There is a rectangular area marked on the cover to hold a decal.
A decal exactly fitting the marked area is on my cover - but:
The decal covers the access to the cover's lock and such the decal
has been pried thru. What a strange idea when you think of it :eusa_doh:

It's all that plastic on the Stihl that makes it look more macho. Kinda like stuffin
a bra on a small chested woman.

I'm always amazed at how Stihl can make a saw sound like a vacuum cleaner.

Here is a NOS clutch-drum for the 1074.
Oregon #28611, out of production for years now. Part includes the needle bearing.
Only RIM could be 8 teeth but it will do with 7.
