Ok so if I want a 395 ,I pretty much gotta get a 395.
I wasn't sure if it was like" you have to file this or that and it will bolt up"
Thank you for the quick reply.
No problem. You can also convert a 394 to a 395. But honestly I’d just buy a real 395 and keep the 394 original. 394’s are getting harder to find in nice shape and they run well as is.

Anyone ever seen one of these before? It's for sale for $450 in Coos Bay on CL. I've seen a 2101 W, but never a 266 W.

Yes rare they are
Get it.
Has the later clutch cover and felling spikes
Should be 3 point
So check for the correct cylinder.
Somebody is selling a nos eliminator kit for 600.00 on facebook.

I've never heard of a 266W. Does the 'W' stand for 'Western' ? Also, that is a 1991 saw, and every 266 up to 1990 was a 2 piece ignition. In 1991 the one piece ignition was introduced on the 61. Since the 61 and the 266 share cases, I wonder if that 266W would be the only 266 to ever have a one piece ignition?

Cool saw. If it was around here, I would grab it.

Just finished up an overhaul with a real classic. Thought you guys would appreciate it. 288 exx peee with the high top, original KS cylinder with nos piston and full wrap. Runs great, hell of a lot of power and compression. Very noisy too with the dual port muffler. When I brought it home it was rough but had a k&n with adapter. I decided to keep the adapter and got a new k&n filter for it. I have never run k&n filter on saws and have heard mixed opinions on them. The number one thing I've heard is that if you don't keep them oiled and cared for they can let fines in. That and working in dusty and really rough environments fines can get past them. Any thoughts or opinions on them?

Doesn't get much better than that. Im starting a 288 project right now. I have wanted one for some time. Now if I can just get my hands on a full wrap and high top cover i'll be set.

Wondering if husky tank vents ever go bad just from age, the small porous white plastic pill in the tank insert in particular?

It passes air on the trusty suck test, but seems fairly restricted, but I think they are kinda like that new.

Anyway, apart from foreign body damage do these ever block from age/swelling or anything like that?

Just not sure if these are a matter of course replacement item or not.

Of course it’s easy to just replace it, but I am sick of buying parts for this saw.

Yes.

They typically begin leaking excessively either around the outer fit or from the pill deteriorating. I use a thin coat of Dirko for good measure between the tube and the tank when replacing one, followed by the sintered plug pressed into position with the appropriate sized drift.

Got a 288xp sent to me to work on. . . needed a new tank handle. After spending time with it come to find out it needs to be tore down and rebuilt including new p&c. I'm not doing this for a living. I run saws for a living I just work on them on my own because I've been ripped off. The owner wants me to use a no name chinese p&c. That is a waste of my time.

Thoughts and Idea's?

I've thought about offering to buy it but I don't know what it's worth.
Gonna cost $500 (tank, bar, rebuild parts) just to get it back to OEM. $400 if I use a meteor p&c.
I'll also add I'm not fond of these saws. Don't like the oiler adjustment, outboard clutch, or where the tensioner adjustment is.

I wouldn’t pay more than $150.00 for a project saw. It took $400.00 to get a 288 I have here rebuilt recently. I didn’t get crazy with the aesthetics though. Kept some of the patina. All oem parts. You can get crazy though and spend a lot of money on restoring it depending how far you want to take it.

I was thinking around that. With the work I did on an 066 for him I almost get a box of parts.

Sounds like one that could go sideways pretty quick. Since you're not a Hooray guy, I'd probably walk away from it unless the owner will part with it real cheap. If he does, and you want to part it out, I've got one in the wings that needs a few things.
