The 572 doesn’t really need heat tape like it’s problematic brother the 562, but I am curious to try it. I found this heat tape at the local parts store. I think it’s called reflect-a gold. It is rather pricey I will warn you guys. The stock squish was about .035 and the gasket is .021 so you can’t do a gasket delete. At least on my saw, yours might be different. Measure to be sure! I made a thinner gasket out of felpro gasket material that is .013, so squish is sitting around .025-.027 on all 4 sides of the piston (the squish band isn’t perfectly flat on most saws which is why you want to measure on different sides). This gasket material was cheap, I think it was 11-12$ a roll at Napa. 1104E0A8-F1DA-425C-A66E-52C5FD7649F9.jpeg

I was able to raise the intake roof a bit without the ring or ring end pin going into the intake. I removed a lip on the bottom of the intake port (reminded me of a 044/026 cylinder, but this saw still idled well). I widened the exhaust to about 1.3” which is 68-70% of the 48mm bore. I cleaned the casting flash out of the lowers. Beveled everything with a diamond ball and put it back together. I did not measure timing numbers or touch the transfers, I took a less is more approach to this saw as I wanted to see how it would respond to easy mods that anyone can do with basic tools.8D96FDE7-12F9-449B-80BD-6A1DF6CFE2CA.jpegEEB4D68E-3DF9-4144-855C-A9616D2BF453.jpeg 81BFC004-DF79-4F18-A430-3274C60119AD.jpeg The saw also has the carb shafts thinned, a muffler mod and a small timing advance.

A few interesting things I noticed with this saw: the factory gasket is a real *a-hole to remove without destroying it lol. The cylinder bolts/spacers are a bit of a *b-word to get set up while installing everything. Be careful installing the piston in the cylinder, the bottom of the cylinder is a weird shape and the rings want to hang. And be careful with the carb auto tune wires. Other than that it’s easy to work on. I thought the indent from the factory in the exhaust port roof was interesting. Almost like it’s to help scavenging or something. Maybe someone more knowledgeable can comment about that. I didn’t really mess with that or try to grind it smooth.

@HYPERSAWS did you notice the lowers on the cylinder are larger than the case cut out? Do you think filling the case with play dough to catch the filings, then grinding the case to match the cylinder would help? There must be a reason why it’s mismatched I thought. It was pretty obvious to see the mismatch, like it was purposefully done?

I did notice they were larger. If I was gonna do anything there I was gonna fill the lowers with epoxy and match it to the case

That would be interesting to see. Have you guys ran a 565? There supposed to be basically a 572 with no stuffers and I guess a worse air filter by the looks of it lol. The pricing is too close to the 572 imo... but curiosity has me wondering if the torque is better with no stuffers with both saws ported. Or if the 572 is still a better runner.

I have not got to try one yet I would also like to run one and see the pros and cons. I hope the air filter isn't any worse. It sux fines thru every day, especially if we cut any old growth Doug fir. If there isn't a oiled pre filter on it's a guarantee there will be fines in the air horn.

Go easy on that. There’s a casting void by where the brake handle bolts on

I haven’t had fines yet (I think it’s related to that nasty dusty Doug fir bark you guys get), but I do wanna try one of those foam pre filters sometime. I think it would extend the life of the filter.

This is great seeing this thread alive again. Feel free to share anything 572 related here guys. My hope was to have a reference thread to share for info, just like the 7900 thread I made.
