Hi Folks.
I just had this dropped off by the owner for a rebuild.
I am no Husky history buff but he tells me its one of the older ones with the Walbro WJ-39 carb that has the big 3120 bottom end.

Whats an old saw without a tech screw holding something on?

I do know that the 394 is an absolute legend saw, and its owner is a top bloke too. I want to do it properly and would also like to give it a bit of extra with some light porting to get it breathing a bit better.

So I thought I would start this threat to bring you guys along for the ride on this classic saw and I would be very grateful for any tips, advice or tricks on these saws.

I have a replacement case half to replace the one with the hole that's been bogged up.

I am concerned about the broken off operator lever from the rear handle, it will need to be fixed but have never done that before.

I do know what I am looking forward to the most.......... testing it once done :)

Case is only for the 394/5. 3120 is a lot bigger than that. Throttle lever isn't hard to do. Just a little bit of patience. The newer style inserts are easy to put on. Just slide in and they snap into place. Bearings are 6203 so easy to get. Seals are cheap aftermarket and oem.

Yeah bearings, seals etc are not a concern.
The muffler is really rusty and banged up, thinking I may get a Hyway muffler as they look good.

Not sure if I should go a Hyway piston with Cabers of a Meteor?
Jason has me all worried about over weight pistons

That old girl has seen some work, but I'm sure with a freshening up it will live to see a lot more!

Like mdavlee said, cases are 394/395 only...The 394 shares the same crankshaft with the 281/288 though.

Yeah its done a lot of work and has never been stripped.
The owner bought a 268 I rebuilt off me and loves it. He has put it to work cutting firewood full time and it eats it up.
We got chatting and he was planning on sending the 394 to a dealer for a rebuild and when I offered my services, he jumped at the offer...... smart man!

I want this old classic to warm the homes of many people for a long time to come!

I have 394 build videos on my youtube channel. Check them out brewz.

Case was easy to deck on bridgeport...seals are easy install. Meteor pistons work fine for me.

Less is more with the port work. Light grinding works fine....no need to go nutz.

I wouldn't worry about piston weight with it.

Going to follow this, are 394s known for occasionally having bearings wear out their housing in the crankcase? I thought I saw that on the other forum.

394's are often used as milling saws. VERY hard on saws. I cannot imagine that these cases are hard to split, and new bearing install is easy, and you can still find case halves...so no worries about spinning bearings.

It's a small market here so it's hard to find parts sometimes but my mate services outboards and he's got a guy he uses to build up crankcases with flogged out bearings for s pretty decent price so I'd probably look at that. I'd like to work on one of these sometime.
