Ok so 99.9% of the guys on here know how to do this and have done many of these. But I figured there might be somebody looking to convert his 261 to a strong running 262 and i wanted to give him some basics to go by. I have done several of these and this is my favorite saw to build and work on. Its a shame they are getting few and far between. I started this build with a basic 261 pho.

After a MM time to get rid of the hda144 for a hda120. Pictured also is a hda87. (144tl, 120tr, 87 bottom) Its easy to see why everybody prefers it. Ck out the visible difference.

262xp decal for starter cover gives it the finishing touch.
The only thing lacking is the three shoed clutch but its not necessary imo unless u port the saw. Btw 261 has a few nice features that 262 does not. Metal clutch cover and outer felling spike.

Great thread Dave, and as always a nice rebuild from you.
Sadly we never had the option of those 261 in Norway.

There is only one thing I hope to find in Norway when it comes to the 2xx serie saws and that is a nice 257 who I can slap 262 c&p on :) 262 Lite :D

Nice! I'm glad I bought a mag clutch cover. How well does the outer spike line up with the inner? I wont put mine on because they are offset from each othrr too much.

I haven't had a chance to run mine yet. Got the oiler issues figured out but the clutch is giving me fits. I'll bring it up in my thread as not to derail yours further.

Take the outer dog and chop it in half, cut off about 1/4 - 5/16" aid mig weld back together, voila.... same length :)

Thanks Tor. I would love to see a 262 Lite but not sure where you would get that decal. ;)

Great Job Dave.

The Spikes didn't line up on mine either. I think Matty has the right fix there.

The 2 shoe clutch worked out great for me, even ported.

If you want to get rid of any decent dished 261 Pistons, I'd be glad to accept them and pay shipping. I think we may be off a bit not using them, but my suspicions may be wrong. I'm wondering if the dish will keep compression down after cutting the band for the desired port numbers. I am worried that the dish may affect scavenging though.

Why did you change from a 144 to a 120?

The muff mod on the 262 is one of the biggest PITA's I've seen. The 261 I converted had a nice removable deflector that made it much easier. The front seems like a simple place to vent.

I will ck and see if i have some good 261 pistons for you. I went with a 120 thinking the venturi was bigger since it came on the 262's but it appears the 144 is basically the same. Maybe sombody has more info if the 120 is better but with limiters removed they might be basically equal carbs.
And you guys are right, the spikes done line up on this saw or my 262. Never paid much attention but funny that husky would put them on 261's and not make sure they lined up.
