I really need to start on my 404 chain. I did almost mount it on the 385 the other day.

This might be a dumb question to some of you folk but Im probably not the only one wondering this... Is there a bar mount file guide that can file square? I have one set up for round but want to set one up for square.

Atop is the only option to buy and use.

Interesting device, I was expecting something more similar to the granberg file guide. That's an expensive guide. I guess I'll try free hand. Thanks.

I have a spare file round guide (File-N-Joint) I might try to modify to hold a square file. Just depends if I can get the proper angles out of it I suppose.

What shape file do you guys suggest for a beginner, single bit, double, bastard, or 3 corner? I'm thinking about trying a 3-corner. That would likely be the only one that might fit into a modified file-N-joint guide. ...

Some of the old file-n-joint's can do square. They're not very versatile with the angles allowed. Here is a right up on how to modify a new granberg.

The 3 corner is more likely to be able to slip into a filing jug with the smaller tang

I'd recommend the double bev for starting out freehand. The 3 corner can be tricky to see the sideplate angle.
