Some great photos in here. Been a while since I checked this thread out. Going to get some square filing done shortly.

Picked up a file today. Also grabbed a loop of Oregon square ground chain just to see where it starts. Square filing is weird...but I'll figure it out. Guessing you guys file back the lower portion of the tooth that is left behind after hitting the tooth with the flat file?

File those gullets first.
It'll make filing with the square easier. Less chatter.

Do you just knock it back with a round file? Sorry that I'm asking questions that may have been answered. Those gullets are what made me say WTF when I put the file to my chain. I know now that my angle of attack was way off. Knowing that you do knock those back makes more sense now. I thought my file wasn't thick enough to make the right cut or somethin. And so begins round 2....

What shape and brand of file did you get?

It's a 6 sided file. Not sure of the brand, got it at my local husky dealer. I'd go down to the barn to look at the brand but we're in the middle of some bad Thunderstorms at the moment.
Nice to have a saw dealer that stocks them. Around here, no one knows what they even are

I'm pretty fortunate to have a great dealer within 10 miles of my front door. The owners son likes porting saws so we get along extremely well...lol. storms are letting up, gotta go for a run in the rain to the barn
