Used square grinders are sort of tough to find. Simington is the only thing out there to buy new. Right around $1100.00 IIRC. A square ground chain will help any saw. They can be made to cut pretty fast & still hold up pretty well in hardwood. Soft wood is just off the hook fast...

Simington won't do round. You can clip the heels and clean the gullets out with a round grinder. A modified pro Sharp will get you close to race chain angles and make a pretty fast chain.

@Definitive Dave I believe the Stihl usg grinder will do both round and square chain. I think there is an special attachment needed to be able to do square. I'm not sure if they are still available to buy new or if you'd have to try and find a used unit.

If my memory is correct @junkman may have one of these grinders and probably knows more about them then I do
My usg only does round, with a thin wheeli was able to get close to square on the top plate but the side of the cutter looked round stull

98 404: is that 32"?

Ok newbie questions and the answer is probably no.
if a guy was smitten with square ground race chain and wanted the ability to produce decently quick square work chain is there certain model of grinder that would be absolutely best - I mean buy it once and not regret having settled for something else later on type quality? New or used? Would that same grinder be able to do regular lgx round chain as well with other wheels attachments or angles somehow?

Now the biggie would that same grinder be useful in getting a chain part way through the process of becoming a race gtg chain, such that fewer hours of hand work would be required?

And if all this exists in one grinder where can I find it and how much $$ is it likely to set me back.

If I head down this road I want to have my brain around it first.
thanks
Dave
No...
It would be a bazillion dollars..

Nate set up my round grinder so I guess I have that covered, I just like a do it all design.
I have been researching the Franzen. My local dealer has one and it is pretty badass, but they aren't sure if it can do square grinding.
At the end of one of the official videos it shows switching out a control module for different styles of chain. I wonder if square is possible, since it does rakers and cutters and deburs the drive links and can be fluid cooled :)

I was referring to GTG/race chains.
I didn't mean to step on any toes. You asked a question that is not specific to GTG/race chains, work chains, full comp square chisel chains, round file chains ect.. you asked "After working a chain, do you guys give them a bath in something to rinse out the abrasives/filings or you just slap em on and run em?" With 37+ Years of experience making my living with a chainsaw everyday for 16+ hours a day and my sons competing in the Lumberjack World Championships & World Logging Championships, I thought my answer was relevant & helpful to you.
