How much skip?

I'm sitting here starting to feel sorry for my 461, it's got a 28 inch bar with full chisel, full comp chain and a 7 driver.

I think there are 'may' be a couple hardwoods here on the place that might justify a saw bigger than my 026, but most of them are skanky ol' cottonwoods, that are not worth doing anything with if cut.

Whole different scene here. Douglas Fir and the occasional Ponderosa Pine, and pretty much any hardwood never gets much bigger than weeds.

Maybe some of the wet coast guys are running skip on their really long bars, but of the few guys I know here, they all seem to be running full comp.

In milling, a full skip may be called for but they leave a rougher surface and dull faster which negates any ease of sharpening brought on by less cutters.
