How does one know when a diesel has a knock? A rod or main. To me, they sound like they're knocking anyway.
What's the secret to telling?

I've seen people using a mechanics stethoscope, that has a bit of rod, to place on the block just above the oil pan to localize what area they are hearing. Usually on their back on a creeper

What are you working on Steve? Diesels can sound like rod or mains knock bc of injector or timing problems.

We used to crack loose an injector line at the injector. The knock would quit if it was an injector. Not sure if it will carry an idle with just 2 cylinders. I guess you could run the RPM up and then crack an injector.

I'd try what sawnami said. Some of those jap built fords were made by shibaru I'm not sure about parts. They aren't as easy to get some of the parts compared to other jap brands like yanmar.
