Then it was a fuel related problem.

I just noticed it has a place for a chain brake. It just doesn't have it on it

It's not uncommon for the handle to be missing. Sometimes it's mistaken for the nut holding it on to be a nut that holds the clutch cover on. Sometimes when the nut is removed, the chain brake will go "sproing" . In the ensuing frustration of trying to put it back, It's often just removed. They can be put back. I've done it. If I can do it, anybody can.

only reason we have this one is it was my grandpa's. Apparently he liked McCulloch. I've worked on 3 now. Lol. My other grandpa has one and dad has one and I had the mini Mac but trashed it

That printed label # comes up as a as a Poulan/Husky/Craftsman/Weed Eater gas blower engine. A few other brand names too. The lusting I saw showed it compatible with about 20 different models. I couldn't tell by your pic which one it is though.
