What's a fair price for sharpening a 16 or 18" chain these days? I've been doin my own so long that I'm out of touch with the market prices. I've had people start asking me if I'd sharpen chains and I really don't know a fair price to quote or whether I want to mess with it.

I do 18" and smaller for $5 - 8 if the rakers need knocked down......$.50/inch of bar after that..,.

Orschlens Farm and Home in south end has a ton of chains sharpened for customers behind the counter.

This is not true. The 461 is not spring av as for the rest of the line up I'm not sure.

Readings this morning, at 7:30, showed 19 degrees. Noontime reading showed it was still 19 degrees.

My dad can take a fairly sharp chain and touch it up by hand and make it a no cutting chain. He has repeatedly admitted to about anyone that he can't hand sharpen a chain and the local dealers stores that sharpen take half the cutter per sharpening.
He finally ponied up and bought a grinder and runs all his chains through it. He also has one saw that is a farm/ranch line that he cuts everything with.

I think a lot of people have tried to sharpen by hand and are not successful the first time and give up to soon to develop the skill and muscle memory to take the same stroke every time

True..

There are also a lot of loggers around here that think they can really sharpen a chain.
Most can make em cut, but not well enough to replace a new chain.
Most of the guys I sharpen for do "touch ups" till they're so screwed up they have to bring em back to get evened out.
