Picked this up a couple of months ago and got it in the kitchen Saturday. I like old cook stoves and this one is fascinating. I got the cook surface burners cleaned up and operating very nicely. Now to get both ovens working.

I drug an old 5x10’ single axle trailer frame out of Johns fence row last weekend.
Had Levi do some cutting and tactical welding, then I put deck boards on it..
I was able to use 4-15” wide oak boards that were sawn from a 34” oak log.
Went with 5/4” thick to mitigate weight.

Coated the ends with used motor oil so they dry a little slower.

When they used to produce gun stock blanks here in Joetown they used a hot pot of wax (black chit) to seal the ends.

Walnut log, Missouri valley Walnut or whatever they are calling themselves now.

Come on up sometime Steve, and you can cook on this old girl. It’s from the 20’s and cooks great.

Back story on the stock blank:

2715 Duncan is next door to the former residence of John Crow. He was an accomplished gunsmith who designed and manufactured a rotating ambidextrous safety for the Win model 12.

I helped an heir clean out the man’s former shop/garage.

In the loft was stored upwards of sixty stock blanks. Some ten or so was gifted to me for my assistance.

I mostly dropped them down on the concrete floor from the rafters while the fellow stacked them outside.

One landed butt end and split plumb lengthwise.

Part of the other half got used to build Michael’s “Pinewood Derby” car. Heavy sombitch!

Let’s see if I’m interepreting this right...

A dobro maker will seal up the wood he makes instruments from to maintain that 30% or so moisture content until he’s ready to actually make something out of it without concerns of doing any damage to the wood? It can literally just sit there for years at ~30% moisture and just be in somewhat “suspended animation”?

No
Seals it and let's it dry slowly
Takes 7 years , keeps wood from splitting
