Are you spying on me again. I have owned 3 diesels and wouldn't go back to gas. I don't pull very often but when I do I pull an open aluminum utility trailer or my aluminum enclosed 2 place snowmobile trailer. I did work it good a couple weeks ago pulling a dump trailer hauling logs for a friend. After pulling with my wife's gas vehicle I can't stand the constant shifting. I prefer to set the cruise and let the turbo do the work.

Lol! No I was referring more so to all the high school punks that got them. I agree after pulling trailer with a diesel it'ld be hard to go back to spark plugs. Our first trailer truck was a 73 Chevy with a 454 in it. One year of hauling the pulling tractor around with that was enough. We've had diesels ever since

You ain't a kidding! When I was in school it was cool to have a older vehicle fixed up. I had a 69 Chevy pickup. Now they all drive newer vehicles than what I currently have. And people wonder where the younger generation gets there attitudes from!

Or just drive around Joetown.

There will be a glut of 5-8 yo fourdoor diesel (and gas) trucks on the used car lots. When the fad wears off.

Almost no bed on them.

Get a suburban!!

I miss my '94 Cheney V6 work truck. 4WD. When on the low side, who needs an 8?

And their emission standards are a lot more forgiving!

IMO, more power and better fuel mileage is why people buy them whether they pull anything, or not, or pull only once in awhile. The new eco diesel from Dodge is boasting 25+ mpg. Older and newer diesels can be tuned to get close to that also. I used to avg about 13-14mpg from my Tundra and 8mpg towing my RV.
My eco diesel jeep gets 26 to 31 mpg. Hard to keep it under 57 mph to get the 31 mpg. Was getting 26 doing 80 yesterday out in the flats of Nebraska.

I was kicking around the idea of selling my rusty 91 suburban and my 10 year old goes NO ! I want to drive it school! Boy I felt proud! And fyi the only reason i was thinking about selling it was the wife hates it.

Yep. This is what bugs me about most of the current "trucks" on the road. By the time you put four doors on a truck, there just ain't much truck (bed) left. Get a dang SUV and be done with it. Trucks should have 8' beds. Useful trucks anyhow.

Short bed is useful to the crowd I work with. Truck big enough to pull a 5th wheel and still able to park it. The lot at the last plant the guys with dually and 4 door long-established were literally walking over a half mile to the gate.

Hell, between Shalie's '13 Passat TDI (soon to be bought back under recall now that it's totaled) and my '03 Beetle TDI, we average about 44mpg across the board (fast/slow w-w/o A/C, etc)... Those two cars have been fantastic. I bought my 7.3 diesel because the Ford triton engines are crap, especially the 2 valve version like the one in my old '01 F-350 2x4 single wheel. 11-13mpg empty and lacking in power. My 7.3 gets the same or slightly better mileage empty than the gasser and even better when towing by 2-4mpg, all while weighing about 3K more and being a 4x4 dually. People have offered good money to buy Dad's 6.0 4x4 F-250, but it's a keeper. If I could buy a modern 400+ cubic inch direct fuel injection V-8 (with or w/o a turbo) I'd be pretty happy. For what I've experienced, strapped to a 25-34' hay trailer or 18-24' stock trailer the 6+ liter gas engines from Ford, Chevy and Dodge will get it done, but get atrocious mileage whether towing or not.

Hell I'd take a single wheel 1-ton with the 8.1L Vortec out of Steve's truck and a 6spd auto ( or 4spd plus a gear vendors) any day... Modern diesels ('05+) wouldn't be such a pita if the EPA wasn't mandating bandaid fixes to ostensibly save us from ourselves... I've never seen Shalie's Passat (with the cheat-tuning) smoke. Ever. If it hadn't lost over 11K in value since I bought it 2.5 years ago and hadn't been totaled in an uninsured hit-and-run, it wouldn't be for sale. Coming back from a road trip to Orlando (when we bought it) I was averaging 47mpg at 70-90mph on I-10, AC on, luggage in the trunk. I may buy Her a Taurus or a Maxima (as she doesn't like the Malibu we rented), but it ain't gonna touch that mileage AND have power.

One of the earlier questions pertained to Europe's diesel vehicle availability vs ours. It comes down to three things - People needed smaller vehicles that were affordable and got good mileage, post WWII. Diesel was it. Their fuel has a far higher Cetane rating and is far cleaner, making it easier and cleaner to combust vs our #2. Lastly, at this point I think that there's too much political/financial inertia against efficient diesel vehicles. Most of the problems with newer ones seem to pertain to the after treatment systems for the exhaust to reduce NoX.

If they were able to sell them here, I'd take a skyactive Mazda 6 diesel in a heartbeat, or a 4x4 Diesel Ranger or Hilux like I drove in Turkey or Germany any day as a commuter/chore truck. I'm not sure what GM's global small truck is at this point as I believe the Colorado/Canyon is US only. I could almost see the 2.8L Duramax version, but not for $40-50K. 20-30, sure.

You said a mouthful there buddy! All good valid information for sure. Me being a diesel mechanic I don't think I could give up my diesel trucks up though but you are exactly right on all your statements! Well put!

If our stupid EPA wouldnt tell everybody that the *s-word coming out of the tailpipe has to be cleaner than what's going in the intake sure would make life a lot simpler again! A little soot never hurt anyone!
