In your opinion, is there a good stock diesel option? I don't have the tools, knowledge, skills, desire, time, or patience to rebuild a diesel motor like you can. And I don't have the $$$$ to pay somebody to do it; nor do I know anybody around here that I would trust to do it if I did have the $$$$.

I have a stock 2012 duramax that has plenty of power for me; but would like better mileage. There is an older model duramax that comes to my dealership with a million miles (literally). I think the motor was replaced or rebuilt (maybe just injectors but not sure) at 200k and is all stock. I know other brands have similar results.

What are the key maintenance issues I need to be aware of?

Any of the 3 pre emissions trucks are good reliable trucks, l personally prefer the 7.3, but the P-pump Cummins are good reliable units other than it's in Dodge, if your wanting a 80% driver and occasionally towing the Chevy's are a good choice, they ride and drive better with their independent front end. On the electronic ones there are some good economy tunes that can improve mileage quite well actually. Now this is just my views and I'm not intending to offend anyone. Stay a way from any of them with EGR valves, re gen Sytems unless you plan on deleting them because it's not "if" it's going to cause problems it's "when"

The newer DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) models do get better mileage. I think Stihlx8 (Nate) is getting 20-21 mpg on a 16 RAM Mega cab. But yes I have had problems with EGRs. First big repair on camper (8.9 ISL) was bad EGR. As long as your not towing the DEF goes a long way. But once towing it will need filled every 900 miles. 3000 miles with out towing. But also depends on your rear axle ratio. My truck with 4.88 rear axle does not use as much DEF as the 3.42 axle trucks. But you can get the same mileage with a few deletes on the older models.

Yup all good points Doug, the Def systems are considerably better than the pre def re-gen systems for sure. More efficient and a lot less issues

With my 08 cummins, when it went into regen I would loose 5-7 mpg, and it did that quite often.
I like my 05 5.9 , will run it till it falls apart.
Had to rebuild tranny at 70k couple months ago. According to Aamco his aftermarket parts are better quality than oem.
Not right but it is that way with alot of stuff these days.
He also put a 3 vane converter in it instead of single vane oem. He claims that is part of the problem also.

My son works for the Ford dealership here in Spfd. I think the best guys to talk to, about problems with certain engines and transmissions, are the factory techs that see them everyday. I think the newest Ford 6.7 has been out for about 2 1/2 years now. I think. So far the diesel techs there are reporting zero problems from the new engine and the transmission techs are saying the same about the auto trans that's mated to it. Surprisingly this is the first diesel that's designed and built by Ford too for their pick ups.

I'm far from a diesel expert though. I'm sure there are horror stories out there even on the newest generation. I'm just passing on what my son tells me.

Farmertec 361 #2 all squared away. Proper boot collar washer and a carb from Dave in Ohio. Normal pull start on choke and one pull restart on idle.[emoji7]

Diesel Exhaust Fluid sounds like one of those jokes that you pull on your wife. Kind of like Blinker Fluid and Muffler Bearings. I've never owned a diesel though. What's it for?

It is injected into the exhaust to get rid of the black soot that is the byproduct of diesel combustion.
It is urea, which is very corrosive.
I don't know what it does when subjected to heat. It will be interesting to see how the exhaust pipes stand up to it.

I think the urea used in DEF used is environmental grade urea which doesn't contain all the harsh compounds as field grade urea. The SCR catalyst would degrade with all the harsh chemicals. But if you get a bad batch of DEF the truck will sense it and limit you to 200 miles travel then you are limited to 5 mph. Had this happen on a trip to North Dakota. We now carry a code reader to reset the code if it happens again. Dealer in Sioux City just rest it and sent us on our way.

When I bought my 08 duramax I was getting 16-17 on the computer for mpg and that was not working for me. A few hours on the hoist and some money well spent the computer now reads 23-24 when cruising at 70 empty. That is more like it in my book. The one problem up here is the urea is it freezes so it can be a pita for some people

Hmm. It freezes.
Glad to know I'm not the only one with that problem.
But I can take pills for that.
