Building it for the BIL, not sure what his plans are.....investment, rental, guesthouse, place for his aging mother.....maybe?
He's not the most communicative fella....

I was hoping one of the boys was building his house due to marriage and children and such.

lol.. we’ll call it practice..

Morning all. Temps been dropping all morning, looks like we already hit the high of the day. Slack time over, cows to feed and work to be done. Looks like if I have time I need to light the stove before I leave.

Good day folks. Cooled to nearer to expected temps 23f now 24f claimed for a bit later.

I'll be tinkering in the garage/shop today getting one saw completed and start on a Partner 500 tore apart that needs new crank bearings.
Plenty to keep idle fingers flexing, I guess.

working on a project. set of custom stairs called floating stairs. gonna be white oak steps 3" thick 12" deep 48" wide finished. looking for alternative ways to dry other than traditional kilns. i was suggested to maybe look for a vacuum kiln. anyone have any thoughts? this is going into a very high end house. it will have to be perfect.

What is your time frame ?

3” thick oak would seem be a time consumer trying to dry.

The best luck I have had drying lumber was stacking in an old grain bin with a drying floor. I dried some 6/4 Cherry down over about 6 months one spring/summer/fall.

If a guy was to run the fan it would likely dry faster.

@Hedgerow & @Sawdust Man are the knowledgeable fellas about sawing & drying lumber.

Maybe you could trade out some green lumber for dry stuff if you are in a time crunch.

.

Drying thick & wide hardwood is difficult.....

I have no experience with vacuum kilns, but I have heard they are definitely easier on the wood vs a regular kiln.
If you can find someone with a vacuum kiln, contact em and ask a bunch of questions, would be my advice.

Regardless of how you dry it, design it so the wood can move with moisture swings.
