The problem I have seen with using mig welders is the aluminum wire can bind up in the liner or the machine because of it being soft a spool gun working better
At the shop my family use to own we welded on aluminum tanker, hopper bottoms flat beds and well as our main work was code welding in volume metiric provers

I welded aluminum grain trailers for a short time 22 years ago. Do you have a wire welder?
I have a Hobart 210 wire feed, for another 2 or 3 hundred more $ I can get a spool gun for it to weld aluminum..... only trouble is I don't really even know how to weld steel......
I can make alotta sparks and melt stuff pretty good now, but my "welds" look like puke!

Yeah with regular stuff it would be futile.

It's been 20 plus years since I welded aluminum, and that was welding grain trailers, but we used Miller mig welders, with push pull guns, and they worked awesome, but they're very expensive. Probably out of the equation.

But, spool guns can be had reasonable enough and do a decent enough job. They'd be a good investment if he had several projects and a mig welder that would accept one. I'm honestly not sure how universal they are.

That's why I was curious if he had a mig welder.

Aluminum is trickier and obviously less forgiving, given how soft it is. I remember having to move a lot faster with aluminum and gun angle mattered for weld finish, if I remember correctly. Man, it's been awhile.

It takes a different gas as well. I do know that.
