Steve my only piece of advise on this: Avoid the 5.4 Triton 3 valve motor due too 2 piece spark plugs (can you say class action lawsuit) and
the issue with cam phasers. Both of these issues can be fixed/modified but what a pain in the arse! And this is voice of experience with the
2 piece spark plugs

I'd stay away from the 5.4 three valve, too. And I think the early versions of the cam phasers were problematic at best. Good idea, just needed more R&D. I'm not sure on GM stuff, but everything Ford, now, has cam phasers. Not sure on diesels. The newer phasers seem to be a lot better, but I think it's more oil related, and more frequent changes are required.

5.4 = no fun, my brother in law
Went threw all the spark plug and cam phase bs, got a loan, had ford put
A new engine in....... oh he was happy. ...
3 weeks ago.... 3 days ago he rear ended
A lady at 50 mph and pushed the radiator
Into the new engine
Btw he paid 7900 to ford, his total loan
Was 13000..... if he is lucky he walks owing nothing. .... and having nothing

Royals won 4-2. Had to go back to the car for coats and blankets. Nearly didn't get back in because my ticket was 'used'. Fellow leaving gave me an unused ticket. Missed one inning as the car was a good half mile walk.
