What about the shed makes you need a permit? Are you running electricity to it? Or do you need a permit to build any structure?
Seriously? If so, wow...[/QUOTE
I think it comes down to this.
Money.
But they don't want you building it within 10 feet of the property line. They want to see where it's being built. I have to supply 2 sets of plans for the shed. Showing construction techniques, too. The permit is $40. If I want to run electricity to it, that's another $40. Plus pay an electrician to do it. Plumbing, another $40 and pay a plumber.
About 4 years ago I replaced a 3 foot tall picket fence that runs from my current shed to my shop. I went to see about a permit. Didn't need one they said. Replacing a current fence.
2 years ago my daughter bought her first house on a corner lot. She wanted to replace a chain link fence that ran along 1 side of her property, facing a residential street, with a privacy fence. About 75 feet altogether. She called a fencing company for a bid.
$5000.
Decided to do it herself.
Had to get a permit. $40.
Didn't matter she was replacing an existing fence.
Another thing, too.
Been thinking about pouring a concrete pad in front of my shop and a driveway to it.
Asked about a permit.
None needed. And they also said I could concrete my entire property and not need a permit. Front yard included.
But they worry about my shed.
Government at its best.
