So....... I need some help with helping a friend.

What I'm up against is that my friend bought a alaskan mill. He doesn't have a big saw, so he asked me if I had anything in a big stihl. I happen to have two fairly complete 460's. I know they are small for a mill but a 660 or 088 aren't a option in his budget.

Now that being said. I'm lost on how to price them to him. One has a perfect p&c but broken handles/plastics. The other has a roached p&c but good plastics & handles. Basically can make one real nice saw from the two.

Where I'm at is they were part of a shop I bought all the parts and pieces from. I probably have more in them than I realize because much of the inventory is oddball stuff not easily saleable. Making these 460's one of the higher value items in my eyes.

What would a fair price be on them? I know what a good runner will bring locally. But want to be fair to him without shooting myself in the foot.

Strumming emotional chords here. I hear you, you want to be kind, but it can turn into a slippery slope. Give an inch, take a mile comes to thought. Be careful.

Figure out what you have in it and add $50-$100? I have a 046/460 tank with a chunk out of the footpad that would be ok in my eyes on a mill? I'll toss it in your box if you can use it! I'll text a pic.

If I sell things of value to friends or family I will price it very well or just give it away. That way if anything goes wrong it's not a big deal. Money means very little to me in the bigger picture. That said, I only do this for f&f that truly appreciate and understand the value of said items and won't just run to the pawn shop with it.

Is the second one with the bad plastics justifiable to fix it? If it’s only going on a mill, and if he doesn’t care, you could fix up the plastics good enough and let him have it for a reasonable price. That would allow you to keep the nicer looking one. If you can clean the cylinder up on it, you’re only out a Meteor piston that way

Would you build the saw for him? I think you answered your own question when you mentioned you know what a runner will bring locally. That’s a reasonable place to start. At least you’d just have to focus on it running right and not being pretty.

No good deed goes unpunished!

I'd be handing off both saws to him to do as he pleases. He is a stand up guy and I trust his competency to put one together.

I'm going to have him join up if he tackles the project. May as well join the nut house.

Steve, i thought u said he was a friend? Friends dont give friends Stihls! Give him a husky! LMAO!!! Id say if u aint partial to keeping one and u just give him both, price it at what a parts saw in whatever shape the 2 combined would be. Thats pretty fair i think. Plus he would be ahead with whatever other duplicate parts for spares. But i dont know what u have into them either. If ya got room to throw a 30 pack on and help a buddy out well then thats a win too! Ur a good dude Steve, ull figure it out:D

The 460 will be a fine milling saw for a 28” Alaskan mill. Friends and family is tough I give family and sell friends stuff cheap. Heck sometimes I hose myself and let strangers buy cheap there was a guy on the Facebook chainsaw group that was having issues with his 391 and I was trying to help him diagnose and get him going because he started his own tree service year or two ago and the 391 and his 390 were his big saws. The 390 broke he brought it in to have it fixed and got it back in a box. He bought the 391 to replace the 390 and it blew up so I sold him my 046 that I base gasket deleted with a timing advance and bridge ports to him for 450$ shipped. Guess I’ve made another friend though he loves the saw and it saved him because he bid a few big trees and only had a ms250 and 029 left after the 391 blew. So now when he’s back to work he wants me to fix his 039 and he wants a top handle only has a 009l for in the tree. So even if it was on the cheap side I’m glad he likes it and I’ll continue to help him with saws for reasonable amounts so he can grow his business. I’m not loosing out on any of it just maybe not making what I could.

Last one I sold on fleabay was a 461 in "decent" shape. A little low on compression for a saw that I would keep, everything on it worked great but it had been used commercially so the plastics and case and all were a little edgy looking. Good amount of discoloration and chipped paint. She went for right around 700 on auction. After ebay fees and shipping for the bar and the saw I took home about $550 which was way more than I expected. I had priced it locally for around 450. 350 sounds totally fair for a friend

I would advice to ask a fair price.
But to be fair I myself would put way to much time in making the best saw possible and then give it.
A real friend is like extension of yourself. It makes no sense charging yourself.
If I feel philosophical, I would ask myself, "would he do the same if the roles where the other way around" (never ask yourself if he is going to return a favour, that's no friendship, what would be calculus, only ask yourself would he)

Stopped by my buddy's work to drop off a few smalls he needed and check out his progress. Had it all switched over and running. Turned out pretty nice. Going to check on some new tube for the half wrap. And then it will really look sweet.

I strongly recommend him to replace the fuel & impulses lines and the carb boot before starting to mill with it. So Waylon......... When you see this. It means it's important! Don't want to see it burn up for something silly.

Join up and post a few pics of it.
