Glass Beading Jugs

Will glass beading a jug hurt the nikasil plating in any way?

Should I mask off the ports and inside of the jug?

Has anyone cleaned chambers this way without making a cylinder sleeve?

I just did one the other day. Masked of all mating surfaces/ports/openings with duct tape and only blasted the outside. Didn't want to take the chance of ruining a good jug. I'm curious to know if anyone blasts the chamber as well. It would be a real good way to remove carbon build up.

I'm thinking that if the beads will harm the nikasil, it's easy enough to use a piece of steel or PVC pipe as a sleeve.

Push it to the top and just blast the living hell out of the chamber itself.

If I remember correctly someone said do soda beading. But dont hold me to it as I never tried it

I've glass beaded at least 5 or 6, I've never taped anything off. I clean the combustion chamber as well I just don't hold directly at the plateing. I think it leaves a decent finish on the ports, then just a little polishing

So Deets, it did nothing to the plating without a direct hit?

The blast cabinet that I use is pretty powerful so it would make me nervous. Suppose I could test on a junker though.

It did nothing to the plateing even with a direct shot, but I wouldn't make a habit of it. I've wondered about cleaning transfer with it but haven't tried it yet

Can't you just turn your regulator down?

Sometimes it takes quite a bit to get the combustion chamber clean, I've spent quite a bit of time on the inside of a jug, I do it in short bursts so I can keep an eye on the plateing but haven't had any problems yet

The glass bead don't seem to bother it, plugs were out on all of mine. Just make sure all meadia is out of the threads before you put the plug back in

I have before, it really cleans things up, but it doesn't last long. It is almost like polishing the exhaust port, it don't last long either.

Bead on lower pressure. Clean every thing with hot soapy water when done (helps ensure all glass residue is gone). Like said earlier watch closely for any degradation to any plating.

Has anyone tried Walnut shells?
I used some years ago but don't have any now. Might be worth getting some more to try.

Walnut shells are a good alternative, not as abrasive.
