GREEN TWP., Shelby County —
A 40-year-old man is being held after he allegedly threatened people with a chainsaw during a standoff with authorities overnight.
Phillip Allen Leonard is being held on $7,500 bond in the Shelby County Jail on suspicion of aggravated menacing; assault; inducing panic; and obstructing official business.
Shelby County deputies and Sidney police responded to Leonard’s home on Ohio 29 East shortly before 3 a.m. on the report of a man chasing people with a chainsaw in his hand, according to a release from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
Officers could hear the chainsaw running inside the house as Leonard refused to come out. Friends and his wife had already run to a neighbor’s home for safety, according to the release.
Authorities said before Leonard agreed to surrender, he revved the chainsaw several times and held it outside various windows.
The suspect was taken by squad to Wilson Health for a precaution because he admitted to using cocaine and alcohol, according to the release.
