I bought my 044 new, at a saw shop in Republic WA, about 20 years ago, it's still stock OEM and runs great! It's seen a lot of wood in that time and is still my go to saw.

The red oak I cut smells like wine barrels.

I agree, I like it. Reminds me of the empty whiskey barrel smell.

I’m just up the hill out of Okanogan. Not too far from Republic. We burn lots of Tamarack and Doug Fir around here!

I love the 044. It’s a great all around saw. It’ll do just about anything you ask of it!

Tamarack and Doug fir makes a good hot fire!

I was running a 32" bar, with full chisel skip tooth chain on my 044 until just recently, it always pulled it like a champ. Now I am running the oem 24" bar on it again, I got a china 066 and have the 32' bar on it.

Okanogan is a nice area, we used to camp out over there at Bonaparte lake and Lost lake a lot. Good clean water for swimming at both and good crawdads in Lost lake!

The wife saw this post, her repy was; I miss bbq-ing with Tamarack, I agree it makes good coals and has great flavor.

You sure you’re not cutting white oak? I’ve never heard of red oak used for wine or whiskey barrels.

I cut whatever I come across. I am not to picky. I was just making the statement that I thought red oak smelled like a wine bottle or oak stave.
I have never made a wine barrel so I am not sure what wood they use, but I'll take your word for it.

It was cool this weekend so I split the pile of ass smelling Oak I blocked up last weekend.
This was the heaviest wood I've ever worked with.
I was surprised that two 20" dbh, 40' trees produced this much wood when split.
I was also surprised at how much work it was. Did I mention that this wood was heavy.

Try processing turkey oak if You have it in Your area.

Sour-ish smell, heavy as lead.
It holds so much moist it is pouring out while being processed.
Impossible to burn the same year it was processed unless it was a standing dead tree.
Once seasoned it is much heavier than an equally sized piece of regular (European) oak.

I get a lot of it and I came to like it.

I get a lot of it and I came to like it.

I used to cut and split at the house until the smell got to my wife. I burn a lot of Oak and prefer it but as you said, it was like moving lead. It think this was red oak. When I stuck a freshly cut end with a Pickaroon, the water swelled around the tip. This will sit at least a year before burning.

The turkey oak I keep getting is distinguishable by its extremely thick bark, easily 2" on large diameter logs.
The initial smell is strong, but it gets pleasant once it starts fading as the split wood dries.

The bark on this stuff was around 3/4" to 1" thick on a 20"round.
I did't pay much attention when I was splitting it but stopped and looked today when I drove by. It's pretty damned thick, compared to the other stuff I cut.
The smell was pretty much gone today.

Two loads of CL farwood for my dad this AM (didn't get a pic of #2).



Then I came home and started splitting my hoard.
And BTW, I asked my wife to come over and smell the fresh splits of RED oak. She looks at me puzzled, then I explain how much I like the smell and that others have commented it smells like puke. She got a good wiff, and said that’s nothing like any puke I’ve ever smelled (she’s a nurse and mother of our 2 children).

Trailer load of oak I grabbed today. Pulled the trailer right up next to it. Cut up the pieces that needed to be, loaded them up and headed home.

You look overgunned. I know that's the west coast way, but man I gotta tell you, I think you should try a ported 026, 261, 346, etc in that kinda wood if you haven't already.
