My buddy has a bandsaw mill and a kiln. I think we’ll take one log to mill and dry next week and see what happens.

I CSM’d a monster a couple years ago. Probably won’t ever do it again. Very dense/hard and not quick to mill. Tons of work but it was beautiful.

Dang good firewood! Cannot say I've ever worked with honey locust boards, but dried black locust I've worked with requires pre-drilling for smaller 8d and 10d nails, 16d twists do better and bend less, YMMV

Meant to mention, the locust here hand-splits pretty well when green, a little stringy but not bad. Once seasoned some pops quickly like red oak and some is as nasty as elm and needs a little hydro

The stuff they sometimes take down is crazy.
But the employees get to it if their bosses don't take it first.

Should it be "BORED" or "BOARD"?
We had an edger man at the sawmill in the 70's that would HOLLER "BOARD"
when he throttled up the Minnie Mo (head saw motor) like a golfer yelling "FORE"
HARRY Birdsong he was a BIG friendly Indian and a large part of us growing up around the mill.
6' 8" @400 some lbs, He Worked for my Dad 20 plus years.

My humble collection. Racks are all scrounged up. Sweet gum, oak , oak, pecan and maple, oak.

Trash pile is bradford pear and the ugly ends from all the other stuff. It goes in the family fire pit

All of the splits go In my charity firewood stand for the local autism program serving ages 4-adult. Started as a set your own donation level but I have since moved on to $5 a bundle.

Scored a decent black oak tree off FBMP today. Rocks everywhere, had to be careful. Bumped em twice dammit. SCarr394, XS365sp, Driller350/346.


Had to 1/4 these.

My first ash tree removal. (Edit: Maybe it isn't ash.) We don't have much ash out here, but 2 of the 4 trees I'm doing, are ash. (At least I'm told it's ash. Bark does resemble it, IIRC) 1 down, 3 to go. The ole pickup box trailer putting in work today.

Was the bark hard and abrasive, and was the wood heavy. That does not look like ash to me. I could be wrong but it looks like hickory, especially the first pic. Did you see any nuts laying around?

That's was the homeowner was told somewhere along the way, it was ash. He said they took a picture with their phone and used an app or something, and that's what it said. So, I'm not sure. I am always bad a id'ing trees, maybe that is totally wrong. I know my chains were way too hungry and were stopping a bit on the trunk.

The wood was definitely heavy, comparable to locust. The bark on the thicker areas was definitely harder, and more brittle, than say elm, and seemed more abrasive than elm bark as well. I also didn't see any nuts.

The next tree, I'll take a picture of beforehand, has very similar bark, but is more greyish, than the darker color of this tree. The dead branches were real hard on this tree. I should've taken a picture of the leaves. I always forget to get before pictures.

I am sticking with mockernut hickory. It is the only hickory that I have ever seen in this area.

You could be right. It does look like it from the pictures on the ole search engine.

Sounds like hickory; like cutting concrete when dead branches dry out. I have to change chains often.
