That's was the homeowner was told somewhere along the way, it was ash. He said they took a picture with their phone and used an app or something, and that's what it said. So, I'm not sure. I am always bad a id'ing trees, maybe that is totally wrong. I know my chains were way too hungry and were stopping a bit on the trunk.
The wood was definitely heavy, comparable to locust. The bark on the thicker areas was definitely harder, and more brittle, than say elm, and seemed more abrasive than elm bark as well. I also didn't see any nuts.
The next tree, I'll take a picture of beforehand, has very similar bark, but is more greyish, than the darker color of this tree. The dead branches were real hard on this tree. I should've taken a picture of the leaves. I always forget to get before pictures.
