Today was the bigger black locust. Wind prevented this one yesterday. Got the entire tree in the truck and trailer.

Tree service guy dropped off a couple chunks today. He asked if I had a saw big enough to cut up a 4’ diameter piece. I told him if he can get it here I can get it blocked up 👍

The 32” bar should easily chew through this. I asked what he cut it with and he said “500i and 28” bar”. He said that was his big saw/bar combo. Oh, other than a McCulloch SP125C lol. What a tank !!

Had started on bucking a fallen ash tree this winter; was not able to get all the way through it because it was frozen to the ground. Got back at it today. Rough count of rings suggests 110-120 years old. Splits just beautifully! Has become my favourite species to work with.

Harvested this at about 35% moisture - it needs to dry fast b/c I have it sold already!!

In full sun wind stacked off the ground ash seasons for me in 4-6 months and it burns wonderfully. It’s not sugar maple but not far off either
It's become my favourite overall. Nearly as hot as oak; splits better (IMO); generally more agreeable to work with; seems to be okay on the ground for quite a bit. Just loving it so far!

Oak when it's had 3 years to dry is pretty tough to beat for BTUs, but I'd rather burn ash or maple. I've got a better chance of getting it dry before I burn it. Plus, people pay extra for oak firewood, so I try to sell it when I can.

Very smart. We've got scores of standing dead oak trees to work our way through. Definitely the highest price around here, too. It will take time to get it felled, split, stacked and seasoned but be worth it for sure!

Has anyone burned oak and sugar maple? I don’t have oak here so I have no reference to it. We don’t have oaks here, aside from bur oak I cut residentially, burned killer.
Probably a heavy sucker when green?

Yup , burn red oak it’s good , very heavy when green lots of moisture, takes longer to season and dry for burning, I’ll split it a little more so it drys quicker, That’s all red oak , IMG_3089.jpeg

Similar to sugar maple but takes longer to dry. Usually splits better. When sugar maples get large the grain tends to get kinda twisted and curly. Oaks seem to stay straighter.

Oh I know about big sugar maple. I split about 6 cord with a chainsaw this year to have uniform pieces.
I used to cut for a guy who called sugar maple ash and a half, because 24” and below it split nice and dried quick but burned longer then ash

I was building these racks in my greenhouse this winter where we could be out of the weather. Filled them up in the driveway and lately I've been them down to the sugarbush where we'll burn them either in the spring of '25 or '26. 20240411_134049.jpg

My buddy Cory recently bought a used skid loader from my neighbor. He parked it here before he hauls it to his folks' old dairy farm so he can get used to running it (hardly ever used one before). So, since it was here we made use of it to unload and line up some racks. 20240424_161526.jpg

Currently I have 18 of these racks full and ready for next season and about 12 left to fill. I figure they're about 40% of a full cord each. Ideally we mix splits with slab wood for the best burn in the evaporator.
