Got the rest of the oak today after assisting some repairs on an ash tree. Should help the tree last a few more years. Oak load one was 60.32 cubic feet. This load is just shy of 24 cf. Should be close to 84.5 cf total or 2/3 of a cord.

Rounded up about 1-1/2 cord of Elm for my son-in-laws father, probably that much left to load tomorrow. It was rather steamy loading today.

And as my reward I am going to treat myself to some prime rib & ribs for supper. I should be set for breakfast & dinner tomorrow also.

I wanted to “like” that post for the great looking food but there was elm in there... no likes for that!

The tree had 2 splits, one in the trunk and another in a crotch. The cable and bolts will help take the stress off the weak areas. Homeowner wants to try and save the tree, can't blame him. My friend, Lefty, has done several before he retired. Taking his advice, I did a crabapple tree for my dad earlier this year.

Grand total of my weekend score of mulberry and ash. Maybe 1.5 cords and should be very little cutting needed.

So you are saying you just raided someone else’s firewood pile... That’s a nice find. It’s been to hot here for me to consider cutting/loading/splitting/stacking. A front just came thru this week is supposed to be cooler.

Almost looks like I stole it, maybe I did, do you think I should have waited until they split it first?
Upper 80's to lower 90's here this weekend. On the warm side for sure.

Howdy folks! So against my better judgement, I decided to suffer through the heat and take down a good sized Locust tree this past weekend. The size was probably 40 ft tall, with a 40 ft diameter crown. The trunk is 3 ft at the base and about 10.5 ft tall and I'm going to try and mill it. The other short trunk is about 4 ft across and maybe 8 ft tall from an Elm I took down earlier this year and I plan on trying to mill it as well. I've got firewood for several years out, so that's why I'm going to try my hand at milling.

That Chevy got a load and a half on it. Nice!

Yeah, it's plenty! Not sure how green Locust compares to other hardwoods, but it's pretty heavy. It is a little deceiving though, since that's just a 3 spring half ton bed. Those 3 springs can't take much weight. I still load her down though.

Edit : And thank you!

Keep us posted. I’d like to see the slabs.

I also agree, that is a heck of a load. Locust is some of the heavier wood out there, so don't brake an axle.

This trip was only 2 blocks from my place. I'm usually a bit more conservative with my loads.

Keep us posted. I’d like to see the slabs.

Will do! It will be my first attempt at it, so we'll see how things go. I'm hoping to get to it next weekend. I might just start a thread in the milling section when I do it.
