Back at it fellas! 4 cord yesterday! The other cord is in a buddies trailer. 1 cord split in the truck. Had to break in the fresh saw rebuilds! They ran great.View attachment 246882
Awesome job Cobus!!
You inspire me. I like the wooden frame surrounding the bed of your P/U.
I could use some extra hauling space when I head into the woods.
Not very good with my paws mechanically, yet it looks doable.
Did you build it yourself or have it built?
How much extra capacity do you gain with it?

Thanks,
Reg

Hey reg! Yes I built the wooden racks myself. When I used to work at a mill I would take some of the outed boards home that were treated. You can make these with 2x6 uprights and 2x4 slats or 2x6.. you want your slats secured on the inside so the bulk weight of the wood is pushing on slats and uprights! The p/u bed is only a 1/4 cord I believe. Adding these racks Let’s me get a full cord in my bed!

Negative on the FHC, I have looked at it a couple of times. Here’s a pic of some Slippery Elm I got a couple days ago, it was exhausting work, Lol.

I cut up some Osage today that wasn’t going to make fence posts, about 2/3 cord on this load & another 1/2 cord yet to pick up & stack. Splitting can wait for a cooler day.

Well this is the last load for the summer for me! Time to enjoy the fam and get ready to fling some arrows for elk! This makes 32 cord since the snow has melted. And unfortunately my 460 took a crud right at the end of the day! But that’s ok I have time to rebuild it along with the others I need to get done.A3AB9080-168C-4B97-99E1-D7A1C373FC8B.jpeg

Jim,

Nice country you have there! and excellent work on all the firewood. Ive never cut any osage but heard its brutal on chains and hard to split but throws a ton of heat when burned. How long does it take to season/dry out before being burned, is it like oak that needs to sit for a couple years before burning? I would think with the country you're in that winds and heat would speed that up a bit? Also, how many cord a year do you go through to heat your house etc?

It can be hard on chains since the bark holds so much dirt & the ones with hollow spots often fill with dirt. It’s really hard on chains when they have frozen dirt in there. Once the Osage is cut & ages a few years it gets really hard. Some of the Osage I have cut for firewood were fence posts I helped my dad set when I was a youngster so I know they have been cut about 50years & still solid. Most folks say about a year on dry time but mine will set till I need it or sell it. I think last year I burned about 1-1/2 cord, that was my first year burning, We started on Nov. 30, It was pretty mild. I anticipate about 2-1/2 - 3 cord on a normal winter. Almost everything in my 20 cord pile came from a fence line I was cutting posts in for my Dad & brother. I just couldn’t stand to see them doze all that into a pile & burn it. So as usual I went all Clark Griswald & went over the top on it.

Rounded up about 1-1/2 cord of Elm for my son-in-laws father, probably that much left to load tomorrow. It was rather steamy loading today.

And as my reward I am going to treat myself to some prime rib & ribs for supper. I should be set for breakfast & dinner tomorrow also.
