Well this is about all I've got accomplished in the firewood department lately. I slow down quite a bit in the hot summer months, but took advantage of the past couple days that have been cooler and organized and cut to length, split some, and stacked what wood I had on hand that needed to be dealt with.

I wanted to get this done, since I will be starting on a very large Locust tomorrow! The trunk is 4' wide, it has 4 large 16-18" branches about 30' or so long coming off it, a huge center leader and it stands close to 40', if I had to guess. The smaller stack on the left is part of the shortest branch that already fell off the tree in a wind storm (there's other stuff in there too). I should get at least 2 cord from this tree, but it will be closer to 3 I'm guessing. Now I got a spot in the center to start stacking it. Left side needs seasoned, right side is good to go this winter, if I get to it. I've got the shed to the left I want to empty out this winter, so I can use it for storing stuff other than wood.

Also, I'll try to get a picture of the tree before and after, but I don't use smart phones, so I'll have to see if I remember my camera or not.

For no older than I am, my memory ain't worth a crap! Lol! I chalk it up to the fact I have no set schedule, or routine, and kinda fly by the seat of my pants, but I think I'm lying to myself sometimes. I completely forgot to take my camera over and take a picture of the tree before I started dismantling it. :)

Anyways, here's part of what I got taken down today. I have the smaller stuff in the back of the pickup yet, which wasn't a whole lot, and ain't nothing compared to these branches.

If any of you folks can help me identify what type of Locust tree this is, that would be pretty cool! It has long thorns all over it, which is the only way I know it to be a Locust to begin with.

Edit: For reference, those pavers are 12x12. The picture kinda doesn't do it much justice. That top branch on the right side is every bit of 18" diameter.

Honey locust with long thorns. Bark like that without the long thorns is one of the thornless honey locust hybrids.

Sorry for the multiple replies fellas, I can't seem to figure out the multi-quote function.

Thanks for the help! Yes, it does burn good! It's definitely the best stuff we have out here as far as dense, good burning wood goes. We have the occasional Ash tree people plant, and alot of Hackberry trees, but alot of people planted these Honey Locusts' in the towns around here. It really helps offset the Cottonwoods I burn during the day.

I ended up getting 5 more trees to do, from people stopping by as I was doing this tree. Not sure what all of them are yet, but none of them are even close to the size of this monster. I wouldn't be surprised if it's closer to 4 cord after getting into it today.

Thanks for link! I wondered if it wasn't some type of boiler. We don't have wood boilers like that out here, so I've never seen one. Pretty interesting!

You see a lot of them up north. I figured it would be cold enough where you are at to be more common. Now that you know what they are you will probably start noticing them more.

It's definitely cold enough, but any boiler we have out here is natural gas. There's really not many out here who burn wood for anything. People out here would rather work a job and pay the energy company for some reason. I only know of a few people who burn wood to heat their home and 2 of those just use wood for supplemental heat.

I'll keep an eye out though. I may have just not noticed!
