I think dad just considers the tarps as consumables. He doesn’t mind the cost considering all the wood comes to him basically free. I think that one is 3-4 seasons old now. He doesn’t have a good alternative.@Wolverine Jason nice work, are those tarps holding up to wind/rain/snow?
Mine seem to fall apart after a few seasons, and I do buy the extra heavy duty ones.
Are you placing any flat boards or cushions to minimize the sharp edge contact?
I'm horrible at ID'ing trees, especially without seeing the leaves, but you're probably right. We don't have tons of variety in town here. Honey locust, black locust, cedar, or elm varieties, pretty much.Looks like Siberian Elm to me
Ah.....thanks for the lesson Jim. I appreciate it.The white stain & streak on the trunk is usually a good sign of Siberian Elm.

The dead limbs with no bark are indicative of Siberian Elm also.

Also that wood on those end cuts look chocolaty, which is also indicative of Siberian Elm.
I know 1 thing (well 2) about black locust. It is hard as hell, and the thorns make you think you are in hell. Found the 2nd item out the hard way cutting up limbs, and blindly grabbing them years ago.I'm horrible at ID'ing trees, especially without seeing the leaves, but you're probably right. It didn't feel like locust when I cut it, but the tree was in pretty bad shape. So, I wasn't sure if it was just the fact it was mostly dead, or what.
Yes, and yes. I've had a honey locust thorn about 2, or 3 inches long shred the sidewall of a tire. They can be some nasty suckers, that's for sure. I have about 7 cords of black locust, I'll burn next winter.I know 1 thing (well 2) about black locust. It is hard as hell, and the thorns make you think you are in hell. Awesome day out so went out to split for a few hours. Original plan was to split hackberry and maple that was cut earlier for the sell totes at Bunny's. Not sure at what point I decided to bring it home so switched gears and split up the mulberry that I picked up this summer. Threw a tote on top as I only have one empty at the house. Hope everyone had as good of a day as I did.View attachment 400985View attachment 400986View attachment 400987View attachment 400988
