I've got log piles every where but I screwed up .My intent was lumber logs but that didn't happen .I dragged two 20 footers out of the pile to my splitter which I thought was ash .Must have been linden .Rotten clear through .So cut it up and dumped in the woods .What a waste of time that was .I'm going out in a short and roll out a big red oak ,4 footer .I think most of it will be usable .

That was childs play that little TO 20 Fergy rolled it right over .I found that hook deal in my woods which I thought at the time it was made for snagging logs .The log has degraded a good bit but still has usable wood in it .It's the bottom 16 feet feet from that stump I'm standing on in the avatar pic .At the time people who know a lot more than me suggested it to be 7-8000 pounds or about 2 cords .That tree was felled when I was still active on AS and that has to be at least 15 or so years ago . Damned shame because it could have been decent lumber .

I got the rare occasion of breaking out the larger saws today A pair of 99 cc Partners that I did complete rebuilds on during the lock down .As usual one decided to be a butt hole and refused to start .Try pulling over 99cc's without a decomp some time . The one with a 32" bar ate that oak tree up .Of course part of that log had rotted after sitting so long .So much I must have lost over a half a cord from a 2 cord log .

I want to point out two things .First that front discharge Partner muffller with the spark arrester removed set that bone dry oak log afire .never before have I seen that .Second last picture .That tree had been hit with 90 MPH straight line winds from a tornado from the south east blowing north west .Fully leafed out it became a giant sail .Cracked that thing from 65 feet down 4 feet from the ground .117 feet oak 75 feet from my house .I had no choice but to remove it .Good thing because that winter this area was the hardest hit from an ice storm in the entire of North America ..It would have hit the house .

The important thing is that the tree is safe on the ground to buck up and that You have some fun doing it!
If You don't have fun doing something then it's work.

I am waiting on some , ahem , "larger" OD logs I purchased on a whim ... 🤫

I have posted my back yard before, but here it is again since I love its sight so much.
About 6 winters worth or so.
All the logs and splits are turkey oak.

And this is the "scrap wood box" which holds any other wood that got cut up on my properties ranging from storm damaged orchard trees and conifers, over a whole uprooted birch and will soon be topped off with a big storm damaged cherry.
This will be my shop firewood.

Actually it's probabley a good thing I didn't cut that thing into lumber .Note the blue stain which is typical of an oak log with metal in it .Oak is the only thing I think that will get those stains . In the avatar pic I'm standing on the stump which I counted 273 growth rings .Dropped with an old red wood slayer from the west coast, Homelite 2100 S .

Years ago in another life with another wife I had some pears .The roots had given away and I shoved them over with a John Deere 450 bull dozer .Gave the logs to a buddy who was a carver and burned the rest .
I still have pear cookies from the pear I cut up almost a decade ago - my mom uses them for decoration and keeps flower pots on them.
No other cookie ever held up as long as these do.

Since my parents bought a new insert, some of the wood I cut for them years ago is too long. Helped dad trim some splits this AM before the heat hit.

Put the chunks in an old trash bin to roll up to the house.

Just starting the day out .That little pile of oak has grown after today ,finish in the morning .I just snapped this pic to point out the splitter which is not mine I'm keeping to prevent it from being stolen. It's a TSC rated at 28 tons but in reality it's about 17 tons because they lie about it as most do.
I've worked on more splitters over the years I have forgotten what I've done them .However this one was an engine change, control valve plus an after market carb on the Briggs 8 HP . The Partner p-100 super is in the pic which is still tuned very rich for the break in runs about two year ago .No probIem I have a little screw driver won't take but a second or two .Then that Swedish bad boy will come alive .That's a 40 year old saw with a complete ,down to the bones rebuild .Might last another 40 for all I know .

I'm done with the worst rather second worse task .All split now to gather it and stack it then clean up the trash which goes in my slash pile .
The p-100 s came around after about a half turn on the high speed .I noticed something on these I think I've figured out .The oil pump is internal driven from a worm gear on the crankshaft .Because of the way the pump shaft is made I think it might "weep " a little oil .This will cause a bit of blue smoke on a cold start which goes away after about 30 seconds .Doesn't hurt anything .

What a day,93 degrees .I got the oak loaded up and moved but I had more lose than I had figured .Just a tad over 3/4 of a cord instead of 1.5 . Too danged hot to stack it today .Beer thirty coming up .
I'm going to lay off those oak logs for a while .Lots of wood but you earn every bit of it .Much easier to cut 8-12 inch stuff .
