I was digging through eBay a while back and saw a Huztl 039 cylinder kit for $32 so I snagged it to get rid of one of these carcasses I have lying around. It showed up yesterday and I took a good look at it. The plating seems to be flaking in one spot and I can catch a nail on it. Is the cylinder section supposed to have a double groove to retain the seal? Only the flywheel side has a double groove on this one. I contacted them for a replacement cylinder. Should I just feather the plating and run it, or should I go for a replacement. I am really interested to see if it is supposed to have double grooves on both sides too. I guess I shouldn't have tossed the old one...IMG_20160418_225302855_HDR.jpg IMG_20160418_225332189.jpg

Pretty sure it's supposed to have tabs for the seals on both sides. And I'd get a replacement with the plating flaking off there

If that spot was below the rings I'd probably run it, but they owe you a replacement anyway, so...

Yeah, I think so too. EBay resized my pictures so they are so fuzzy they can't really see the problems. I tried to email the pictures, but they blocked the email because it had pictures. It is all a freaking hassle...

I wouldn't use it either, however I noticed something I haven't seen in the 039-390 jugs before. The roofs of the transfers appear to have a concave roof. This was something I mentioned some time ago as to whether anyone had seen open transfers with a concave roof.

One of the big issues of open port transfers is that the flow gets 'lifted' off the top of the piston. Theoretically, the concave roof should help direct the flow of the transfers to be more horizontal and direct the flow across the top of the piston.

Has anyone else ever seen concave roofs on open port jugs?

I wouldn't call it concave, but it does look like it has a lip that directs the charge down a little.

Don't accept a defective cylinder, they will run very well if they send you a replacement.
I would recommend oem or caber rings and either modify the included clips or locate a nice tight fitting circlip (I think somebody said an oem echo clip I'd perfect).

I eventually got an email from them that didn't get filtered by eBay. I sent them the pics. They said their "expert" said it would be fine and to run it. I told them they needed a new expert... I then explained why it was not viable to use it. They offered me a partial refund for the cylinder alone. I asked them to throw a cylinder in with my next order and they agreed.

If you order through Ebay, just start a return for defective merchandise.
Don't let them push you around.
They used to be much more responsive to complaints but lately I have gotten slower responses and some "engineer" mumbo jumbo.
Given the proper encouragement they have made everything right, I am guessing they deal with a lot of homeowners who don't know diddly about chainsaws daily.

I've had good luck with the farmertech stuff but a guy brought me a cylinder for his saw that was missing quite a bit of plating below the rings I tried to get him to return it he said put it in. It has about a year on it now suprised me I thought it would have trashed itself.

Missing playing would bother me less than flaking plating. Flaking plating is a recipe for a scored up piston and that is just the tip of the iceberg...

The Farmertec I got looks real similar to that one, including the missing oil seal flange on one side.
Plating just plain ole stops a few degrees above all the uppers and seems to be non existent at the sides of the tunnels

Aftermarket cylinders are definitely hit and miss. From a performance stand point I haven't liked any but I have seen some very nice cylinders. I got a 372 here with a stock meteor cylinder on it that looks and runs great.
