Can get either for prettymuch the same price. Will be a 'tractor saw'. Firewood and trail maintenance. 5-6 cord per year. I like an 18" bar.

Makita 6100

Echo PS620P

Gimmie the good bad or otherwise on these two? Not really interested in any alternatives.

Leaning towards the Echo as I like the local dealer.

TY in advance!

All my saws are Echo or Makita so for the size you’re looking at my choice would be the Echo. If you want to save a few bucks go with the 590. I had a 6100 and everyone is different but I didn’t care for it, just wasn’t comfortable for me. I love my 590 with 20”.

6100 holds more fuel if that matters but in the long run who knows what replacement part will be available since Makita wants to do away with gas.
Thought I read no more internal combustion for them after 2022?!?!

Thank you Gentlemen! Input is greatly appreciated.

Keep it coming?

I will add...I own a 550 and a 2166 already. Looking for something right inbetween. 590 has less HP than my 550 does, which is why I'm interested in the 620 Echo. If it's gonna be a little heavier, it should have more HP IMO. :)

What are the major differences? I'm guessing porting, know about the double ring piston, crankcase?, clutch covers, crank stuffers?

Big difference is the 620 is a rim drive while the 590 is spur drive. The rim drive is a big plus but the 590 will take the 620 rim drive.

The 590/620 is damn near the same size as your 2166 and not much lighter. If your wanting to spend money get one of you saws ported or look for a 60cc saw that isn't the size of a 70cc saw.

So you're saying get the 6100?

Isn’t Makita getting out of the gas saw business? Parts may be harder to find in the future. Both make good saws. Can you run them both that would be best help making a decision.

You're going the wrong way. You have a 50cc and a 70cc saw now you need a 90cc saw.

On another note the 6100 can share bars with that 550.

I have a MMWS ported 6100. I love it. I’ve heard they are slow but torquey stock. They are heavy and hold a lot of fuel. Nearly as heavy as my 2166. Start very easy.

For light, nimble, and power I very much like my 2159 which is a ported 357xp. It’s light enough I don’t bother with a 50cc except for small branches.

Nothing as of yet. Been watching reviews and reading because I can't seem to spend over $20 these days without doing due diligence.

Preference is the Mak thusfar.

Is that 550 a mkII or first edition? If you like 18" bars, that works. But, not my money.

OG 550. Yep, can be a lil quirky but has never failed to perform.

I do like the 20-odd 18" loops that I have.
