Have you tried a full comp chain on your 462 with a 28” bar

Nope, who the hell wants to hand file a 28"+ full comp chain!? Happy to hear opinions, but I'm happy with cutting speed on the skips. I guess full comp could be faster. I run full comp on my 261C with a 20" (3/8ths, .05). For the wood I have here it's fine (cedar, fir, spruce, alder, cotton).

I'm still learning, so by all means lay it on me. :)

Those are short bars still no need for skip, 32 to 42 I’ll run semi skip and 50+ I’ll run skip for production falling applications. Alder you really want something cutting as fast as possible so the most teeth that saw can handle is best as well as sometimes grind can change.

I grew up on the east coast. Thinking of a 32" as a short bar is definitely a change in perspective for me.

I’ve been running my 500i the past two days on the fire out in Glide. Cutting trees away from houses and fire lines...anyways, the saw has been doing great, but it just doesn’t have the top-end speed like other saws. But when you dog it in or get some pressure on it, it settles in and feels great.

So it needs the rakers maybe a little more aggressive then what we would normally set them at?

Can we cut with short bars yes but is it efficient no the closer the bar is to wood length the faster you can line up faces as well as back cuts. Can we all line up cuts with short bars yes but when cutting by the bushel vs by the hour bar length can make a huge difference.

Oh, I completely understand that part of it. Where I grew up there weren't many trees approaching the diameter of what is out here. That is all I meant by it. The idea that I as a homeowner have legitimate use for the larger saws that I have is just outside what I experienced growing up. *s-word, my dad would have killed for my MS261C with a 20" back when were clearing the lot to build our house. Actually that reminds me I need to hunt in the barn for the old Mac, and Johnsered next time I head that way...

Add a gear with another tooth.

Are you aloud to modify your saw on these jobs ?

Mine needed a 25 and an 9 tooth to get loaded up enough to slow down a little bit (in the cut). I couldn’t stall the chain, even on dogs with the 8 tooth

I readily hand file 36” full comp chains and find them extremely fast to skip chains in seasoned wood it all about the amount of teeth in the wood not how fast the chain is turning :)

Perhaps, but then it approaches a grabby chain. Fine line there, as you are well aware of.

A very fine line some days at that. It almost sounds like they went backwards in a way more like an 056 then a 66 which is great till you need that speed.

That's the life I dream of.....I can stall my MM660 with two fingers lifting rear handle 18"B/C. :(
