I'm glad you revived this thread, my interest in the 500i is returning and I'd like to hear how your second go round is.
I think things will be better this time. It is a very interesting saw, and I was very impressed with the power, and of course how light it was. If this one runs like the last one, at least I’ll know that’s how they all are, and a guy will just have to get used to it.

I'll sell the 572 for one I think, provided we get some more legit feedback like yours.

I too am interested in feedback from both saws. I have been following this thread from the start, just recently quit lurking and registered. The 500i has caught my attention. I am thinking that it could be my big saw in my puny little 2 saw plan. I got to hold and run a 500 at my local saw shop last week. Not for sale, demo only, they told me. They expect to start seeing them in 2 months. I guess it gives me a bit more time to save some cash. The one I got to play came standard with the 3/4 wrap, bigger double dogs, and a 28” es light bar. Just the way that I would want it. I would eventually get a light 32 or 36 for the bigger stuff that I occasionally encounter. Keep up the good feedback and info!

I am not sure what the plastic piece is for. I was able to get a set and the screened muffler. There is also another 500 on the way. Giving it another chance.

Is it for the scrench? The emergency Stihl saw has something similar.

I don’t believe so. I believe it is some sort of air/chip diverter as @jacob j. said. I looked at the parts diagram yesterday, and that is what it is called. Pretty interesting.

That’s strange, up here dealers cannot demo saws. So I’m told and the backlog is so long they said don’t expect one till the new year.
So I’ve decided to take the 460 to CFB and have the other 2 2171’s I have massaged. Stay tuned.

It is the first time that I have noticed a new model that had a demo prerunner in the store. They often have a saw of a certain model that they will let you run a bit at the store. I wish they would let me take the 500 home for a few days. They used to have a log out back that they would let you cut on. Last time I asked they told me to bring my own log and help clean up when I was done. I kind of want to roll a big pickle off the side of a trailer and leave it there to get turned into saw chips.

I stopped back in to the saw shop on Saturday. I wanted to lay a 461, 462, 500i, and 661 next to each other. I was comparing how wide each felt as well as balance. They said we might start seeing some 500s for sale by the end of the month. I still need to bring a test log in to play on. I should be cutting some 30” fir toward the end of the week. I will try to save a gnarly butt end to roll off behind the shop.

Ok that’s what I was guessing they would be around the 13-1400 range. Didn’t know they still made the 32-36” light bars anymore. Was jus look a bit last night for my 066 and saw 20-25” listed on stihls page but didn’t look real hard
