Chatter in dry hard eucalyptus (Oz wood thread)

next challenge is figuring out how to sharpen to cut Aleppo pine well. I think it’s actually the most difficult to cut wood I have here. I’m thinking square ground might be the ticket. I need to mod my 32” Stihl bar to fit my hooskies and try some Stihl square I got.

My two bits, to me it looked like the rakers on the 2166 are too low as my 272 did a similar "happy dance" when I dropped the rakers too much.

I am certain I already suggested this, but here it goes again:
You need a slow turning saw running a full chisel chain (either round or square I guess)!
090 or 166 maybe, or any other high cc saw tuned really rich so it doesn't rev all too high.

High tooling speed and hard material being processed do not interact all too well.
I deal with this issue every day working metal/cast iron on mills and drill presses.
The physics are basically the same!

I would love to try my limited chainsaw chain sharpening experience in those logs You are cutting!
Looks like a fun challenge.

You need the black and yellow guy in this pic: 6000rpm max, .404 semi-chisel chain, manual oiler, I think it would be perfect for the concrete trees you have to deal with.

@CR888 I didn’t realize you were Australian. I got a convince my wife on a vaca there. She don’t like all the snakes and spiders and critters she sees online. This wood is indeed the same as yours…imported for windbreaks and pilings long ago.


@Woodslasher, yes way too low, I got impatient trying to get it to grab in the Aleppo. As it turns out I think the problem was the chain skating on too much chip load. I had an idea I ran by @Armbru84 that it turns out he uses. I’m going to try grinding the fins in safety chain into extra rakers to clear chips.

The additional "safety feature" fins are a nuisance at best and a chip clearance issue at worst IMHO.
I ground them completely off on my TriLink chains and the cutting performance went up significantly.

Rather keep Your rakers conservative in order to promote chip clearance!.

But, I can only compare to bucking turkey oak hardwood on a regular basis.

Don't worry about all the criters over here they don't bother anyone who is not trying to bother them. My tip on the wood... .404 semi chisel 20°-25° top plate and not to much hook. Oh & lots of cc's!

I guess it would make a durable cutter, but it may cut slow.
Then again, what chain is not slow in dry hardwood.

I can tell you from experience the smooth bark red gums and boxwoods extremely hard when dry absolutely a pleasure the cut when they're green I'd rather do that than willow and pine

Get some quality Stihl chain.
That Raisman .404 chain looking at your pics I wouldn't call great quality it probably needs a rub after one cut lol
Soft chain might be good in softer timbers and easy on ya files.
But you have some dry hard timber there you have the saws all you need is some quality chain. Stihl chain is hard with thick chrome get a loop each of RM and RS see which one you like and how they hold up and just run a 7pin(404) if not already on ya 3120.

after watching the videos it looks like you are trying to cut too fast. maybe its just saw but shallower depth guage so its not taking such a big bite and let the saw do the work dont push on it

That is what I keep telling/repeating, hard materials and high feeds do not correlate!
I would lean toward long run slow and steady rather than try go fast for a short run time.

I wish I could give those logs a try, I am curious how my chain filing would hold up.

@rogue60, @huskihl and @Armbru84 found that raisman to hold up very well in dirty hard wood. It has held up better than full chis for me of course, until I hit that nail. It’s kind of strange, low profile, small diameter file. https://opeforum.com/threads/sharpening-raisman-404-semi-chis.24716/

Yes Yellowbox, there was a lot timber in that tree.
