It's all I use to do hand file. takes too much time if you own more than 1 saw with 2 or 3 chains. IL use a file if I'm on a job and need to finish up my day but the grinder is so much more consistent and quick
Yes, the grinder is very consistent and I am happy with the edge I can get on the cutter too..... also it is very nice to be inside with my daughter at the end of the night, rather than hand filing in the garage and drinking beer lol...... like I said I am just starting so it will only get better!!!!!

Anyway you can send a picture of the top of the tooth. Also I've learnt, just last week. That when you zoom in, you can tap screen on what your taking photo of. And that will help make a clearer picture.

Also, can you include picture of your setup. I'm no expert, but I remember starting out. It will take you several chains just to get comfortable using the grinder. Atleast you aren't burning the teeth.

I use an old Foley Belsaw grinder which doesn't have a lot of choice on adjustment. I use Foley's grinding wheels, 3/16th for 3/8 chain and 1/8 for .325, they last for years and years grinding my own chains. I rarely sharpen for anyone else, too much of a pain in the arse,,mf's wanna' bring me a chain that looks like they've used for a rotor tiller.
I grind everything at 30 or 35 degrees.

Tips/tricks I've picked up:

Dress the wheel often. Keep the profile round.

Just barely tap-tap-tap lightly, Don't overheat the cutter!! I usually go around the chain just touching each tooth a couple taps then move to next tooth, going around the chain a few times until I bottom out on the "down stop/depth" adjustment of the grinder. (I grind the gullet deep)

I don't clean my chains

That's my take on it, hope it helps..

Hey thanks for pic tip.... ya I can take picture of my grinder I use the Oregon 520.... what kind of grinder are you using???

I am learning a lot each time I use it for sure....I think as someone stated I wasn't goin deep enough into the gullet in the .325 chain...

I didn't get a chance to try that chain last night but I will use it today and report back for sure.... I did look at some RM pics today and it looks kind of what a new factory edge looks like...

I love to grind, as already stated, you have to find the grind your customers like. I grind all mine the same now. Seems to work just fine.
ill post a picture tonight. If you think it will help. mine are no where near perfect.

got me a CBN wheel for 3/8, 404. Since the majority of my chain is 3/8 I figured it would pay for itself. Don't have to worry about it for the next 20 years.
Let us know how you like it. I been wanting one, but read where they will load up easy. Please tell me this isn't true

He's doing good, I went into a panic when I felt that knot, and had to leave.
Little man is doing fine now. We just got back, but heading back out at midnight. Good thing is, I'll be back in shop all weekend. We have a lot to,do.
How have you been?

Where do the fellas source the cbn wheels? Here is a question I have for you more experienced grinder operators. I got a hold of a nice Oregon 511a grinder. I am noticing when I grind chains the left hand cutters are ever so slightly longer than the right hand cutters.o_O I am sharpening a variety of full chisel chains in Oregon & Stihl in both 3/8" & .325. The grinder came to me set at 55 degrees & the vise is set at 0. I set my angle at about 27 degrees figuring that's somewhere in the middle. The chains are used on hardwoods. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Under the vice, you have to get down and look up under it. Should be two Allen screws. I loosened mine, that allowed me to move the vice over.

The owner's manual shows you how to center the vise (Page 12, Figure 22 and 23). In reality, this may change as the wheel wears (changes diameter). So I sharpen all of the 'shorter side' cutters first; then grind one sample cutter on the longer side, compare length, and adjust the cutter holding stop slightly to match.

I just looked under my vise, I also unscrewed the knob all the way off that you use to go from left to right cutters & took the vise completely off the grinder & looked there. I don't see any Allen screws. Am I looking in the right place?:eeeeek:

My Oregon sharpens one longer than other. I've centered it, or I thought. Moved vice one side to other. But still have to adjust it when I sharper the left teeth.
Any suggestions on how to get them the same. Without having to adjust the stop.
Using new wheel, used a straight edge.

I'll post a picture of mine in a few. I have two different ones. I'll look at both of them.
