yeah 1/8 filler is pretty huge for this that and getting g all the powder coat off of something like this is rediculous spent an hour in the bead blaster still had trouble ..... one filler rod and maybe with gas I have 5$ and some time into it ...... don't take it the wrong way I'm not trying to justify fixing a recoil .... but if it was this or wait a week this isn't as bad as you would think. Well that is if it works when it goes back together

Determined arent you? I would say that is some tough stuff to weld.

Ha ha true I'll give you that on the grinding however grinding is like a woman's brest you can't go in all ham fisted. you have to finesse and caress it sometimes tweek a nipple. That's my preferred method of grinding practice anyways. But back to welding magnesium. Its nothing like aluminum at all ....... the puddle seems to want to live under a layer of chalky garbage no matter how clean everything is. Its also so hard to shake the habit of standing off a little so the puddle dosent jump to the tungsten mag seems to like the tungsten all up in its business. I dont know if it's just the magnesium or if my points need adjusted in the hifreq generator but the high frequency seems to help one moment and totally screw you over the next. It seems to help clean the trash out of the puddle but if your not almost touching when you start an arc it blows craters. That could be the points tho as it sounded really harsh. But now I'm out of stuff to play with and I still have 31 sticks o filler .... seriously anyone got a saw run over by a skidder or something a real mess for me to try to put back together ??

I'm impressed by your repair. To be able to fix those ribs with 1/8" filler is impressive.

About Mag, yup on all of that. It's dirty and wants a super tight arc. My balling of filler was likely from too loose an arc. It just didn't like to flow for me.

It doesn't seem to mind a dip or two of the tungsten either. Odd.

People can criticize all they want, but unless they have Tig welded themselves, they have no idea how difficult it can be.

Kudos on your repair. Great job. With Mag, pretty sure that grinding is part of the package. I've yet to see an aesthetically pleasing weld like on aluminum, even from the best of welders.

I completely agree.

I've practice with the Tig at work and can turn out a OK weld with stainless but my aluminum doesn't look as nice as TreeWorks mag welds.

It's more of an art form than welding in my opinion.

I dare say if it was thicker like twice or better may have been able to make a decent looking weld .... also using a miller trailblazer 280 kinda like driving tacks with a post maul I had it cranked eight down and was just hardly tickling the pedal then again maybe there would of just been more trash working up to contend with

Practice bud. Mag is odd. Don't flow like aluminum and its dirty to weld.

I got a high tech square wave inverter. My TIG skills medium at best. I found difficult repairs difficult.

Practice on an old case first for sure.

@srcarr52 is very talented at it. When I used copper backing, he told me it was incorrect with Mag.

I don't remember saying that. I don't do it but I can't see a reason why using a copper back would t work.

You told me it about a case repair. You said there would be a lot of cavitation of the weld near the backer.

Might arc out through the copper if it is grounded that should pose a problem I guess ...... seems like when mag arcs out its way worse than aluminum but then again my stuff might not be running that great Sitting around for 5years or so dose that

Probably. You'd probably have to go back over the backer side to build up more and melt out the cavities.

I have a 044 case that needs the starter cover bolt holes welded and retapped. Here is what it looks like. If you would like to tackle that i would be willing to drop it in the mail.
